Problems playing double sided cd

I have a inspiron 600m that I bought 1 year ago.It came with a CD-RW/DVD player. It's a Samsung cdrw/dvd sn-324s.

I got a new music cd for x-mas. It's a double sided. One side has all the songs like a regualr cd and the other is a dvd with videos and stuff. I always copy my cd's to my computer so I can put them on my IPOD. The problem is that when I put this cd in, it will not play the cd side but the dvd side will come up. When I put it on the cd side, it just keeps spinning it and it just spits it back out eventually. I have copied a ton of cd's and never had this issue. Why won't my laptop run the cd side? Does my player not support dual layer? but why would it play the dvd side?

I put the cd in my MUCH older (like 4 years old) desktop and it plays the cd side just fine..... So lost, help!

Laptop Noob,

Are you sure that the music CD you have is not double sided vs. dual layer?  Dual layer is a high capacity DVD format that offers double the space of the typical DVD format or roughly 8.5GB.

What I have seen is some artists are providing one media that has both, video on one side and the actual music on the other.  Don't laugh when I say this, but the new Backstreet Boys CD called "Never Gone" is like this.  This double sided media is a rather new and with that every CD player may not recognize it.

Two questions, what is the exact name of the CD?  Just curious as I am a DJ and have over 1300+ CDs in my collection and I wanted to see if I could replicate the problem you described.

Next question is, are you able to copy the audio side in the PC that is able to read it?  Then try to have the troubled PC read the copied version of the CD.  I know this is not a great solution, but record labels are cracking down on bootlegging and as a result newer CD formats are being developed.  The bummer is with that said not all players will be able to recognize them.  Ugh!

no, iam not even able to have it copied. It doesn't even read the audio side of the cd at all. It just spits it back out.

Thanks for the reply.

Wow, Iam sorry. I don't know why I put down dual layer. I think it's coz I was reading about it before I made my thread. I will try and change it in my original post. Sorry lol

Yes, I did mean 2 sided cd. It's the new cd from system of a down, HYPNOTIZE. About 1 week ago my gf wanted me to put her Rob Thomas CD on her ipod. and it was the same deal. I had to put it on my other desktop and then transfer the songs to my laptop. It was a hassel. It seems like I will have to do the same with this cd. Except I go back to base (i'm in the army) on the 2nd and I will not ahve time to go to my parents house to use my desktop (i live with my gf) so i might not be able to get that cd on my ipod. Dang! I might try to find it online, free...it's not a crime if I own the cd is it?

Some of the records labels are using advanced means to prevent copying which is a certainly a bummer.  Sounds silly but this is why I keep an old spare PC around that has old hardware that does not have all this new security blocks that some new hardware has.  Ugh!
