Replacement hard drive for CPi D300XT

Question

(My apologies for a subject that I'm sure is repeated often, but I couldn't find an exact answer here.)

I'd like to replace the 6 gig HD I have with something larger. Can anyone tell me what other drives will work in this laptop? I see references in this forum to the IBM Travelstar (20 gig). True? This would be perfect for me.

I did look there first. Unfortunately, there is no 20GB drives listed for the Latitude CPi. Do you know what the largest drive is that the controller in this laptop will work with?

dpearce2,The largest hard drive certified for the system is a 20 Gig drive. It may be that this specific size is temporarily out of stock. I was able, however to locate an 18 Gig drive for the CPi system by using the Quick Search at the Dell Software and Accessories site and searching for cpi hard drive.

Success! This is for those of us who want to upgrade this laptop.

Warning: You mileage may vary. Don't blame me of Dell if your laptop doesn't upgrade. This upgrade also does not improve hard drive speed (sorry).

I started with a Latitude CPi D300XT (BIOS A09) with a 6.4 gig (IBM TravelStar DADA-26480 21L9481) hard drive.

After reading everything I could and comparing specs, I took a chance and ordered a 20gig IBM TravelStar (DJSA-220 07N4388).

It's smaller in height but mounts exactly like the older drive. Specs are identical in all respects except height (smaller), bigger in size (duh), higher arial density and number of platters (3 -> 2). Power requirements and access times are identical.

Short story: Put it in, BIOS recognized it properly, FDISKed it, formatted it, GHOSTed the old data onto the the new drive and it works great!

Is the new drive (20gig IBM TravelStar DJSA-220) signficantly quieter than the original? I have a Latitude CPi D300XT (6.4 gig IBM TravelStar DADA-26480) that has a high pitch whining sound.

I have used up to a 48GB (IBM Travelstar 48GH) drive in a CPi D300XT before.  IIRC,  someone else has used a 60GB drive in one as well.

thanks, this is really great to know. I was told the original 6.4gig is way too small to accommodate the microsoft suite that I want to install. Word, powerpoint, excel.
So do you know what amount of gigs I need for that ? At least 40, right?

It depends upon what options you choose,  and how much free space you want when you are done.  Windows XP will want aout 1.3GB itself.  Office 2003 Pro is only using about 500 MB on my system,  so if you assume it uses 1GB,  then you are still only using 2.5GB of space for the OS and Office.  That owuld still leave you with almost 4GB free for other things if you are using a 6.4GB drive.
