Replacement hard drive for Inspiron 6400
I want a replacement hard drive for my Inspiron 6400 (purchased in 2007) but am confused as to whether the new drives ar compatible.
The original hard drive is a Samsung HM160HI. The specs say it is SATA but also Ultra ATA-100 which is where I'm getting confused as on some forums people say these are 2 different things (ie ATA-100 is IDE).
Most new drives seem to be SATA-300. Will these be compatible with this laptop ?
I tried to ask in a Dell online Chat but only got the sales dept. who said I had to talk to technical support. When I tried that, I would have to pay for an answer as the laptop is out of warranty so I'm hoping someone here knows the answer.

Any 2.5" SATA drive that is 9.5 mm or slimmer will work.
All SATA 3G and 6G drives are backward compatible with your SATA 150 system.

I have a DELL inspiron 6400 laptop and its hard drive crashed I replaced with a new hard driver.
(1.) I installed window 7 on the new drive and it worked fine. The only problem is after it shuts down the DELL MEDIAL DIRECT started and restarted my window 7. I have to unplug the power line.
(2.) So, I read my inspiron 6400 documents and found to replace a hard drive, I have to reinstall DELL MIDIA DIRECT, install the OS, install the DELL MEDIA DIRECT again. I follow the procedures, but it stuck on installing OS, even after I have format the hard drive.
(3.) I have managed to install a vista or window 7. If I restart them it ok, but if I shut down them, I always get DELL MEDIA DIRECT screen and cannot start my OS any more. The error message is “MD extended partition table error.”.
I am stuck at (3). I think (2.) – reinstall DELL MEDIA DIRECT – it cause problem.
Please help!!
