SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616E [CD-ROM drive] --Burning problem, please help......

I recently started having DVD burning problems that never happened before.  I get a message that reads, "generating DVD borders completed successfully" then another box reads, "burn process failed at 2.4X".  It should also be noted that I went from Nero 7 back to Nero 6 because 7 was just plain bloatware and I wasn't gaining anything.  Does the driver need updating?  If so, what is the exact best way to do this.  I tried cleaning the lens with a DVD cleaner disc.  Why would I just start getting a message like this after burning successfully numerous DVD's?  I have read blogs and threads on the subject that seem to contradict each other.   So once again :smileywink: I turn to the answer folks within this forum for help.
1.  All Nero updates are loaded. (Nero 6.6.1.15, Digital 3.1.0.25 and Media player 1.4.0.35)
2. System restore won't help since I can't remember the date that it last worked right.
3. Speed set to 2.4 DMA etc.
4. Burner is a SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616E [CD-ROM drive] (came with the computer)
5. Switched DVD brand to see if that was it.  Nope.
Please, this is driving me batty!

Hi Jdog,

The drive you listed is a standard DVD-ROM (read only) drive; here is the manual:
Samsung 616E.

Since you have been burning DVD`s in the past, it must be with another drive, do you have the name/model handy?

When you rolled back to version 6, did you use Nero`s Clean tool to remove all of version 7 before installing 6? This at times can be an issue.

Best Regards

Predator,
Thanx for the quick comeback.  Here are the two drives directly described from the Belarc advisor:
_NEC DVD+RW ND-2100AD [CD-ROM drive]
SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616E [CD-ROM drive]
The D drive is read only and I write and read on the E.  Yeah, I did use the Nero clean tool also.  I have previously burned countless DVDs with no problem at all.  Any other thoughts?

Hi Jdog,

Dell released a firmware update for your NEC 2100, have you tried it yet?

Best Regards

Edit: sorry, took me a little longer to find it:
NEC 2100

Predator,
I thought we had it bud.  Did the firmware update like you said.  (Although you did not indicate whether or not I should delete existing drivers or anything.  I just downloaded and ran it.)
This time when I went to burn, everything appeared operating normally for about 4 minutes and then BAM, "could not perform end of disc at once".  "Burn process failed at 4X". ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!
Can you please list in order the steps I should do to get back burning.  This 4 year newbie needs guidance.  Do you think I should run the Nero Clean Tool again and try to reload.

Thanx for you patience, guidance and expertise.

Best Regards,

Hi Jdogs,

Firmware and drivers are two different beasts my friend, you ran it correctly.

Sometimes after applying a flash, Members have Cleared the NVRAM. CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 11, article 2. Also after a flash, verify the drive is still running in DMA mode, not PIO mode. Running Nero`s Clean Tool and reinstalling will not hurt, at least give you a clean start ( again ;) )

I have to ask this, so please do not be insulted, not my style, you are using DVD+ media, correct?
I worked with a nice gentleman one night for over an hour on one of these earlier drives and he had picked up DVD-R discs by mistake.

Best Regards

Hi JDogs23,

I would verify my DMA setting first. Although it is not suppose to happen, it will drop in PIO mode and this can effect the burn process.
CD/RW link again, Section 15, article 14 & 17.
If this does not help, then I would Clear the NVRAM, this basically forces your system to redetect your hardware. I hate saying this, sounds like a broken record, but "at times" after Clearing the NVRAM, if you do not have a floppy drive, the BIOS will turn it on, so you will have to enter the BIOS/System Setup and turn her off.

If this does not help, then I would reinstall Nero as mentioned.
Also, is this drive still under warranty?

Best Regards

Predator,

OK, I have now officially gone into the deep water.  I will need local hands on from someone to do this I think.  My son is quite good.  It's just getting him here to do this stuff.

And no, I am not insulted by your question.  They are +R's.  I have burned countless dvd's previously.  If I do these steps do you think it would be necessary to reload the software too.  Or should I try these things first?  What are the steps you would?  In what order, that would make the most sense and likely do the most good?

Thanx Jeff, you're the best!

Predator,

Am trying to convey to you the error log from most recent test and am getting error message that won't let me send it to you.  I did all that you said and warranty is up.  What gives?
