SSD upgrade and enabling UEFI again after Windows 8 install
Hi, having an issue w/ installing Windows 8 on 128 GB SSD using legacy boot (to easily boot from CD/DVD) and then reverting back to UEFI boot sequence. Model is Dell Inspiron 17r SE. I am by no means an expert on terminology and technology, so I hope I am using the correct terms. I have removed the 1 TB drive that was originally shipped w/ it to make install easier. I am able to successfully install Win 8 on the new drive (using a Dell Win 8 disk). After I restart and try to go back to UEFI, I get a constant reboot back to BIOS/Legacy/Windows Boot Manager/UEFI/Settings/Diagnostic menu. Windows 8 will only boot if Legacy option or boot first hard drive is selected. I DO NOT have the msata SSD, so my issue is not in the intel matrix driver issue (or whatever it is called).
I have looked at the PDF of installing windows 8 in the wiki/forums and it basically tells you to put the computer into legacy mode and install Windows 8, but does not tell you to go back to booting from UEFI. The only thing I am not doing according to that is downloading the SATA drivers onto USB/add to iso and loading them at install. Would this be the issue? I wouldn't assume so.
I have also tried hitting Shift + F10 at install and entering Diskpart, Select Disk 0, Clean, Convert GPT and exit and then installing. No change. Am I supposed to fully install Windows 8, go back to install disk, do the Shift + F10 sequence and then not install so it would convert my disk to GPT? I would assume Win 8 install would ask if you had UEFI and act/format accordingly.
Any questions or comments, please let me know. I would love to have this mode enabled for faster booting. It's fast now going through bios boot, but I would like to have it go through UEFI.

When you use legacy mode to install Windows 8, your setup application assumes you want to format the SSD as an MBR disk. That is why your system keeps jumping out of UEFI. Try removing your current partitions (the disk needs to be blank to start), changing your System Setup option to UEFI mode, and using the F12 one time boot menu. Your computer should have an option on that menu to boot your DVD/CD drive in UEFI mode. Once you reach that point be sure to select the option to format the disk as a GPT disk. UEFI mode can handle both MBR and GPT data drives, but if you want to boot in UEFI I'm pretty sure the system drive needs to be a GPT formatted drive so that it has the UEFI boot blocks.

Yep, that is exactly what I had to do. Didn't know you could boot from CD/DVD from UEFI mode, but it works, and windows went from there. I still used the Shift+F10 option and made sure the disk would be converted to GPT partition.
