STOP: C000021a {fatal system error}

I'm getting the below message with a blue screen at the end of shutdown of my system

STOP: C000021a {fatal system error}
The windows Logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a staus of 0XC0000005 (0X00000000, 0X00000000). The system has been shut down.

I then have to take out the power supply to shutdown the system.

System: Windows XP, home edition, version 2002, SP2

NOTE: this error started after I loaded hijackthis on my system because of a trojan that mcafee could not take care of.

Any help wold be appreciated.

see if you can get into safe mode by pressing the F8 key when you first power on your system. If you can get into safe mode go to add/remove programs and make sure you don't have goback installed, if so unistall and reboot. IF you don't have that installed try booting to safe mode and seeing if you can run a system restore to before you downloaded hijack disk. You may have had your sys files corrupted due to the trojan on your system and hijack this depending on what it found does read BFO files that are needed and shouldn't be deleted from your system. If all else fails you may wanna backup and reinstall the operating system, thanks.

Thanks for you input.....

Started in safe mode and checked add/remove, no sign of goback.  I tried running a system restore prior to downloading hijackthis, but it said the restore failed.

The mcafee's trojan message that keeps popping up is : Downloader - AWX,  found on c:\windows\system32\mmfcap.dll. This is what I used hijack this to remove, but it is still there. I am also getting a winlogon.exe encountered a problem message and it tells me to run virus scan.

I'm hoping not to have to reinstall the operating system if I can help it.
