Samsung DVD-ROM SD-608 Failure to read CDs

I am running on Windows 98 SE with a Pentium 3 Processor.  My CD-Rom Drive is a Samsung DVD-ROM SD-608.  Whenever I put a CD in the CD-Rom drive, it begins to make the sound like it is reading the CD, like it is actually running, after about 5 seconds of making the sound, it just stops.  Every once in a while(very rarely), the CD will actually load and the auto-run will pop up but after I hit play game, it never does anything and asks to put the CD in the Drive. This has been going on for a while now, what could possibly be the problem and what could I do to fix it?

Thank you,

Ryan

Oh by the way, this happends with all of my CDs, so it isn't just one.  And sometimes when it DOES run the CD, it will make a ticking noise, and won't work at all.  When it stops making the "revving up" sound, it just goes completely silent, and does do anything at all.  I am on a Dell Dimension XPS T600.

I am experiencing a similar problem with this drive, only with DVDs.  It plays audio CDs and data CDs just fine, but when I insert a DVD it freezes the entire system.  I must remove the DVD to unfreeze it.  I haven't tried to play a DVD for several months, but it worked fine last time I did, so I am stumped!  It's in a Dell Dimension XPS B533r running Windows XP Professional.

I have same problem (Samsung SD-608 DVD ROM drive won't play DVDs) on my Dimension xps b733r.  Drive churns for a while and then gives up.  I've searched repeatedly and found several people reporting this problem but as yet haven't seen a solution that works.
