Slow performance on Ghost 7.5, external USB DVD ROM´s and an Optiplex GX270

I'm pretty new to Dells and so any ignorance on my part should be forgiven!  This is quite a specific problem.

Í'm trying to load an image onto a  batch of Optiplex GX270s using Ghost 7.5 and an external (USB2) BTC DVD RW. This solution runs fine on IBM thinkpads and HP D330's and takes appoximately 15 mins to image approx 5GB of data on a USB2 based system.

However, when I run it on the above Dells it takes anywhere from 40 mins to over an hour (which is more like the type of results I get from a USB 1 machine. I have disabled all uneccesary hardware in the BIOS (i.e. com and lpr port, network and sound) and still I get no joy. The BIOS is the latest version I can see (A03).

I'm using the Panasonic USB ASPI driver v 2.06 (USBASPI.SYS) in conjunction with USBCD.SYS (not sure where this comes from, but it works!) to access the DVD drive.

I've sorted this. Just in case anyone else has the same problem, here is the solution

It appears that the USB aspi driver fails to see that the controller is USB2. To resolve this download the latest panasonic USBASPI1.sys (ver 2.15). This gets the transfer speed back to the USB2 standard.

You can download this from http://www.bootdisk.com/usb.htm

We are having problems getting the GX270 to boot to Ghost 2003, much less a USB 2.0 DVD writer. Can you tell me how you were able to boot to Ghost and save your image?  We have no floppy, only USB and DVD/CD combo drive.  Dell is less than helpful and no-one has gave me any answers on my post, only more questions.  From reading though the posts, this seems to be a common problem that dell has stuck their head in the sand and hopes it will go away.  When we purchase computers next time you can be d@#n sure they won't be dell !!!

Your threats give no meaning or urgency to your posts. There are no vendors that support dos anymore. Dos is End of Life, End of Support.

Even symantec says they wont support USB or PCMCIA or external CD or CDRW because they do not want to deal with the associated problems and variables.

The panasonic driver is for this drive

http://panasonic.co.jp/pcc/products/drive/cdrrw/kxlrw40an/

Download the driver here

http://panasonic.co.jp/pcc/products/drive/cdrrw/kxlrw40an/download.html

It creates a directory called F2H and the ASPI driver is in there
