Sony 'DVD+RW DW-R56A' on my 8600

Hi Guys,
I bought my 8600 around this time last year, and have had to have my motherboard and DVD+RW drive replaced. The motherboard has a power fault, and the DVD+RW made too much noise. However, after I had my drive replaced, I started to require more room for backups than the 700mb's CDs had offered me before. I bought a pack of DVD+R x4, and these do not work. Windows sees them as a blank disc, and I am aware Windows does not support DVD burning, so I have tried Fireburner, Alcohol 120% and Nero 6 Reloaded. None of them work, and I get an error just as it is about to start burning.

I was told it might be the quality of the discs, so I have tried many other brands, including some quite pricey ones. None work.

I also reinstall Windows fairly frequently, and nothing changes. CD burning is perfect, and I have no problem with it. But the DVD burning just doesn't work. I also think I had an older x4 drive previously, but the upgraded drive is x8 to my knowledge. Surely x4 discs shouldn't be a problem then?

Thanks for any help you guys can give me,

Btw, I have not used DVD-R/RW or DVD+RW, only DVD+R. I assume DVD+RW would give me the same result, and the minus format would not do anything at all.

Mine is kinda doing the same thing my cd/dvd/rw rom won't read anything that is put in while the computer is on.  Then when you shut it down with the disc in it.  Then you can turn it back on and it will read it and will work.  Its really bad that i have to put a disc in and then restart my computer so it can read it.

Hmm, well I think I'm going to have to ring Dell up again.

If the replacement drive they send me this time doesn't work, I guess its something else, so they'll have to come and fix/replace my motherboard again. :smileymad:

I have this same problem. I was once able to burn to DVD+R disks but now I am not. I burned to the same disk before I left on deployment but now the drive has only worked for me 3 times when burning to DVD+R's. It is frustrating because I don't want to shell out the money for Sony DVD's that will take a long to get here to Kuwait and then I won't know if they will work. I called Dell and they are telling me that I will have to reinstall my operating system. Why I don't know. I there any firmware for this drive that is easily gotten. Please help if anybody knows.
