TSST Corp DVD +- RW TS-L632D ATA Device not working properly

I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 with Windows Vista 32-bit.  My DVD is no longer working properly.  When I put a movie DVD in, the drive/movie starts but then stops about 5 seconds into it.  I've tried several different movies (all movies I've played on this computer before), to no avail.  I've chatted with Dell Hardware Warranty support and they had me update the firmware.  That did not work either.  They had me put in a music CD to see if that would work.  Again, CD's I've played on this computer before now just skip over all the tracks.  The drive does seem to be whirring more than normal so Dell is sending me a new drive (it's under warranty).  However, the tech also suggested reinstalling Windows.  Should I really consider doing that?  It just seems a bit drastic.

Thanks in advance,
Jess

Just a hunch while you wait for the replacement drive.  I do no have Vista.
The following link is about DMA.  About half way down under the heading Windows,
then to Windows XP and Vista, follow the instructions for enabling DMA for Vista.
It is worth checking before the replacement drive arrives.

DMA is enabled on the two channels I have.

Also, I ran the diagnostic and all tests passed.

I got the same problem.
Mine is a Inspiron 1520 running Vista chinese version.  It's less than 1 week old and the drive still worked yesterday.
In the hardware management console, I got a message telling "windows cannot load the device driver.  error code = 39"

I just got my replacement drive.  I will let everyone know if it works when I get home.  I'd do it on my lunch break, except I don't have any DVD's or CD's here.

wallace.sh.fung,

For Error Code 39, try this Article for Removing the UpperFilters
and LowerFilters Values with the Registry Editor here ...............

Disregard the reference to Roxio.

Well, installed the replacement drive tonight.  No luck.  New tech wants me to do a PC restore.  Ugh.  Gotta back up data before I can do that.  Why did I buy a warranty if I'm the one doing all the work?

I have same TSST device running on an XPS M1710 with Vista 32-bit.....drive was working for a few days but whirring at incredibly fast speeds....then today, NOTHING. It is not recognized in Windows Explorer, as if the drive vanished. Device manager gives an Error Code 19, "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)" I draw a blank with the "report to Microsoft" pop-up box, was gonna start a new thread but saw this one regarding the same drive. I bought from reseller on Ebay so I have no tech support,,,any help appreciated here.

Scruzin, please try the below procedure whether this is working great for you ...

  1. Click the Start button, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, expand the following registry path:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
  4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
  5. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
  6. Click Yes when prompted to delete the registry value.
  7. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
  8. Click Yes when prompted to delete the registry value.
  9. Quit Registry Editor. To do this, click Exit on the File menu.
  10. Restart the computer.

I wound up doing a PC restore setting my computer back to it's factory settings.  Now I have to go through setting everything up again.  Ugh.

When I go to the registry entries I dont have any upper or lower entries. But, I still have a problem where the drive is not recognizing any blank dvds. Any other thoughts?

I have Dell E1405 with TSST-TSL632D with the latest firmware downloaded from the Dell website.
