Targeted read test fail on dell latitude 5500

Have had this second hand laptop for a few years and I've been noticing sometimes the hard disk drive light goes off and the computer shuts down without warning. It's only happened a few times but I've always been able to get it back up and running. Did a test with dell support assist and it came up with targeted read failure error code  WHD20-8Y4. Don't want to get a new disk drive if I don't need to.. Anyone help?

Have windows 7 o/s with a Samsung ATA hdd. The screenshot is from when I did a disk check to check the c-/ disk. The computer is no longer under warranty. Could I get an external hard disk and attach it to the computer and things would be ok? I'm not really good at this type of technology issue

You can use an external drive for backup, but not to run the system.  You'll need to replace the drive and reload the OS.

On this model the drive is easily replaced:

Once that's done you'll need your recovery media to reload the OS.

You'll need to call Dell Support to purchase a copy of the recovery media if you did not prepare a set when you receive the system as new.
