Two noisy Hitachi 120Gb harddrive

Question

I have a question. I'm trying to get an answer from Dell and Hitachi, but don't it.

I have two computers both with a 120Gb Deskstar Hitachi harddrive 7200 rpm.

The harddrive makes a moaning sound exactly every 10 minutes. Have been testing everything even with only the power connected and no IDE cable to the harddrive, the sound appears every 10 minutes. They answer I got from Dell is that it is the callibration. No problem with it, but why is it so noisy and don;t otherharddrives have this.

Is this something normal for Hitachi? Never had it with any other brands. Is there anybody else who has an Hitachi 120Gb and has this and may be fixed it?

The problem with it is that I'm working in an office environment and it distracts me, just because it is every 10 minutes.

furtil. If the system is under warranty, then phone [don't eMail] Dell's Tech Support and request replacement hard drives, preferably not Hitachi/IBM. Bev.

I've been on the phone with Dell for 2 weeks now. 1st they refused to replace them, because the harddisk itself did pass all their tests. Then they where going to replace it. Booked in a Seagate, I was so happy. Then they came to replace it, guess what they took with them as replacement: a Hitachi, because suddenly the Seagates where not in stock anymore. Phoned Dell again, had to do the tests again on the new Hitachi. No errors again. Phoned them again, got as a reply that the noise is normal. Called Hitachi, from them I got that this is a usual thing, it's the Idle Time Function that is build in (could not find this as a feature of the Deskstars on the website). They also added to it that they have the industries most quiet hard drive. I replied to that that it is indeed very quiet, except it is a bit like bying a new car, which has the most quiet engine in the world, except every 10 minutes it makes some extra loud noise to keep it quiet and properly functioning.

So I'm desperate and still anoyed by the sound of these harddrives.

If someone told you that you will get a Seagate, then continue to pound home this point. Other option is to return the PC or stop doing business with DELL. F.

I had the same problem with a Deathstar 60GB drive, Dell sent another Hitachi which I refused. I eventually got a Western Digital 80 GB( Dell said they were out of 60 GB) which is very quiet.
