While running backup the DVD drive will not format a disk after a new disk is inserted
I have an Inspiron 1520 with Vista HP. Recently I have encountered a problem with backing up data to DVD's or CD's.
I run backup from "SYSTEM & MAINTENANCE", using the "BACKUP & RESTORE CENTER". When I start the process I am prompted for a disk, when the disk is inserted I get a window that reads- "Format was not successful" followed by, "The default file system for this disk cannot be determined. The following information might help you resolve the error; The disk media is not recognized. It may not be formatted". I also get an error code )x800706f9
When I'm not doing a backup I am able to read the same DVD's or CD's and I can burn to them. When I try to format I can only choose the "mastered option". I suspect a software issue. Can anyone provide information or a link to help sole the problem?

Hi, Len:
You're on the right track. If you check drive properties, do you see a recording tab and if so, is recording enabled for this drive?

Under properties, the recording tab is set for the subject drive to be the default drive. Drive "C" is choosen for free space to burn a disk. The box for automatic eject is check, aside from Global settings there are no other options.

See if this article is any help. It's a general troubleshooting article about LFS, which seems to be the main problem.
Wish I was using Vista so I could learn a bit more about the disc burning utility.

Hi Osprey:
It is beginning to appear that there are several problems that relate to my issue. I have recently followed instructions that are in article#929461 and relate to Windows Vista SP1 and DVD issues, this did not remedy the problem. Before I try the information in the article that you forwarded, I have found that Microsoft is offering free unlimited installation and compatibility support for Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 1 (SP1). This support for SP1 is valid until March 18, 2009. Currently I am working with support by E-mail--- slow, slow, slow!
I will let you know what I find out about the LFS article, meanwhile, should you come across anything else that way help me, please forward it on. If I find a solution beforehand I will be certain to post it.
