Write Error/Roxio Program

I have a Dell Dimension 4300 with an NEC NR-7800A CD RW drive.
Recently I unistalled the Roxio Easy CD 5 that came with my Dell when I purchased it in 2001.  I installed my newly purchased Roxio Easy media creator 7.5.  When I tried to create a new audio CD the burn process would freeze and I would have to cancel and shut down the program (not responding).  I subsequently discovered my Windows Management Instrumentation was corrupted and I had to do a Windows XP Repair Reinstall.  Once completed I used the Roxio program right away and it worked!  Then slowly I downloaded all the Windows updates, hotfixes, Service Pack 2 as the Repair Reinstall deleted them.  Once done Roxio no longer worked.  After researching I downloaded an update to my CD RW posted here on dell and then discovered the Adaptec File still related to the Roxio 5 program and deleted it.  Now I get the following error when trying to burn an audio CD "write error-medium error [03/0C/00]"  It seems that this error is a hardware error and could be that my drive does not read certain media (which seems unlikely to me as it worked fine will all sorts of CD type for 4 years), or my CD RW drive is not working properly any longer.  I can't imagine after 4 years of working fine that suddenly the drive has issues reading certain types of media.  Additionally that the drive is no longer working also seems "odd" that it coincided with installing this Roxio program.  Does anyone have any other ideas before I resort to purchasing a new CR RW drive?

Hi Deedee,

Unfortunately you cannot rule out a bad drive, these drives can fail from one song to the next or work for years.
Since you stated the problem seemed to begin with the uninstall of version 5 and upgrade to version 7, you may have not got a "clean" removal and this is causing conflicts. Try running this Roxio program and then re-install version 7.5 again. This should at least cover the software side of the equation.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Then to cover drivers & filters, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 12, article 10.

Best Regards

Its buggy ROXIO software.
UNISTALL ALL VERSIONS OF ROXIO.

Turn off system restore.

REBOOT 3 TIMES.

Then edit the registry to remove upper and lower FILTERS problem.

Then reboot 3 more times.

You can turn back on system restore if you want.

Then INSTALL ROXIO7. BTW ROXIO5 IS NOT COMAPTABLE WITH XP SP2.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=314060

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

STATUS
This is a known issue that can occur when you remove Easy CD Creator version 5.01 or earlier or DirectCD version 3.01c or earlier. This issue may also occur with Easy CD Creator version 5.01 and with DirectCD 3.01d or later.
MORE INFORMATION
There may be other third-party CD-writing software products that exhibit similar behavior. Some or all of the troubleshooting steps in this article might apply if such a product also adds entries under the UpperFilters or LowerFilters value in the registry, either by adding its own filter drivers or by removing the registry keys and values outlined in this article that begin with:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Roxio Easy CD Creator 5
Installation Steps
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You must be on at least version 5.1 to run under WinXP. Version 5.1 and later run just fine under WinXP/sp1.
In order to run under WinXP/sp2, you may have to do a complete uninstall and reinstall AFTER applying the sp2 update.
Please be advised that Roxio has said they do not support Version 5 running under WinXP/sp2.
But many folks have gotten it to work successfully.

You may want to check under “Recorder Support” on the Roxio web site to see which version first supported your cdrw drive, if you have a newer device. You will need to use the actual drive-id string found under “properties” for your cdrw drive.
Do a complete and clean uninstall of any previous versions of Easy CD Creator.
You can do this via "Control Panel" - "Add/Remove Software".
You can also download and run “roxizap” to cleanout any remnants left behind (although this may not be necessary).
Get it here: http://tools.roxio.com/support/tools/roxizap.exe
Be sure no other packet writing software (such as InCD from Nero) is installed.
Download the updates for Platinum 5 from the Roxio site.
Currently, you want 4, including:
5.3.5, photo, video, & 5.3.5driveup.
Note: if you are installing the “Basic” version, you only need the “Basic” 5.3.5 update
and the same driveup535 described above. You cannot apply Platinum updates to a "Basic" program installation.
Install ECDC 5 from the cd.
If you get a warning message from WinXP/sp2 that the software may cause instability problems on your system you can tell it to install anyway - but you are proceeding at your own risk, since Roxio has not ensured the software will run under all WinXP/sp2 situations.
If the install says there are no supported recorders – tell it to install anyway.
(the updates will add support for some newer drives)
DO NOT REBOOT - Once again - DO NOT REBOOT!
Run all the updates – be sure to run 5.3.5 before the 5.3.5 driveup.
Then Reboot.

Updating ECDC5
------------------------
Make sure you have downloaded the correct version for what you have installed.
You need the "Platinum" 5.3.5 update if you have the full retail version installed, or the "basic" 5.3.5 update if your installation came with your computer or burner.
If you are not sure what you have, try to run Soundstream, Sound Editor, or Label Creator. They only come with the Platinum version - so if you don't have these - you need the "basic" update. The Platinum 5.3.5 update will not run against a ECDC5 "basic" installation.

ECDC5 & WinXP
-----------------------------
1) Roxio does not support ECDC5 on a Windows XP with Service Pack 2 machine, there are several compatibity issues that affect a majority of customers (however not all).
2) This does not mean the program will not work, it means that if it doesn't work that there is no magic patch to fix problems specific to service pack 2.
3) The majority of people who have ECDC working on their system first had a very clean installation of WindowsXP w/SP2 and preferably ALL windows updates before installing ECDC 5.
4) Many people who updated to service pack 2 while ECDC 5 was installed are having problems.
5) There may be conflicts between ECDC 5 and MediaPlayer 10 or Real Player while running XP Service Pack 2.

Thanks Predator - I have followed your instructions and now within Roxio under Disc and Device Utiltiy it says "Medium not Present- Unit not ready [0x123A000C].  If I press burn then next window has a check next to the E: drive but says 'put disk in' when there is one in it already.

In "My Computer",  drives are fine and no exclamation points etc. under Device manager - all seems fine.

Any suggestions?  Also is this Roxio program full of bugs or is it just me?  I have half a mind to ask for my money back and just go with something else.

Hi Deedee,

Well Version 5 of Roxio had a few issues with it but speaking honestly many programs will have a bug or two. Version 7.5 seems very well liked by our Roxio Users.
I Googled your first error message and came across a thread in another Support Forum. They discussed firmware updates, software, trying different media and of course a failed drive.
Take a moment and look Here

I would run the Dell firmware update once more, sometimes it seems twice is the charm. If the drive is out of warranty I may have a link to another firmware update, will have to check.
After trying the firmware again, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1 & Section 20, article 3 and run these steps. Also verify that the drive is still running in DMA mode and not PIO mode, same CD/RW link, Section 15, article 14. Also do try a different brand of media, actually do this first, you never know, the drive may have changed its "taste" of media.

Best Regards
