configuration of harddisk

Question

Hi

I am trying to attach a new Harddisk to a GX1 - without succes. (Quantum Fireball lct20 - 20,4 GB / 16383 cyl, 16 hd, 63 sec.

It is not recognised in the BIOS, when set to auto.

When trying to set the configuration manually i dont get the right values. When setting the cylinders I type 16383 and get 6383 out!

So far I have upgraded BIOS to A10 (checked cables with a nother HD, set the HD to CS)

That right it is not seen in the bios. The detection is set to auto. the jumbersetting is set to CS and there is only the same device on the cable.

I have checked the cabling with an old harddisk and it went allright.

My first gues was to enable large disk access but there is no such option in the dell bios.

What do you mean by not recognised?  What does it set in the bios?  Have you another device on the same cable, and have you made sure it too is set to cable select?  And have you made sure that if this new disk is to be hard disk 0 ( master) that it is on the furthermost connector from the motherboard (if using the original Dell cable...).

Are you replacing a hardrive or adding a new harddrive?

I presume that, as this is a 20G drive, it isn't new.  Do you know its history?  If it was originally in a Sun computer you may have such problems.

I am replacing the old drive, which was damaged with an drive former used in various pc's (bamboo), none of them had any peculiar setup's.

I can only suggest you double check the jumper settings, as everything else seems OK.  Can you check the drive on the CS setting in another computer?

I would set the jumper settings to master.

Sometimes this works with a single disk, but as many others have found more often than not it doesn't on a GX1, particularly if you add a second device on the primary IDE OR secodnary IDE channels.

I allready have tryed setting the HD to master - but it didn't help.

All my trouble started when I added an ekstra CD-drive to IDE2 - They are both visible and working. Disconnecting these drives didn't make any change!

Next step I will try to find a HD of about 3 - 4 GB and start over again.

Check the CDROMs are both set to cable select as well.  Are you using the original Dell cables?  Do you only have AUTO selected for the devices that are actually present whilst you are moving things around and disconencting devices?

I Took the HD from another Dell and everything worked - so I didn't solve the setup problem, but the PC is working.   Thank you everyone
