drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of the normal specifications

This is the message I get on my computer when I start up :

Warning- Dells disk Monitoring system has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of the normal specifications .   It is advisable to immediately back up your data and replace your hard dish by calling support dish or Dell Computer Corporation.
   Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility

Nothing new has been added....the computer has been running fine and continues to run fine after I hit the F1 key.    Every restart or fresh boot brings up the warning message - The operating system is XP.    No virus has been found.   System is pretty clean - I don't keep a lot of junk running.

Thank you in advance for your help;
Linda

It's very possible that your Hard Drive is about to fail.  I would follow the instructions and call Dell to see about replacing the hard drive.  If your out of warranty, I would replace it.

That's not too encouraging.

How do you run scan disc in winXP - i see nothing for it only defrag.  No bad clusters are found in defrag.    I would like to try some other options before buying a hard drive.

Thanks again

windows XP doesn't include ScanDisk.  Start/Run type CHKDSK /F and enter.  Answer yes and reboot your system.

check disk and defrag all run fine and shows no bad sectors or clusters.   One thing I noticed is though the computer has XP on it the file system is FAT 32.   Seems odd....

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.   Thanks again for all the help.

More than likely, your looking at the Dell Utility Partition when you see FAT32.  Right click on My Computer and select Manage.  Then select Disk Management.  This will show you the details of your HDD.

It was in disk management that I saw it was FAT 32 - showed the drive as "healthy".

Pyryan, I have the EXACT same message on startup.  I just hit F1 and everything works fine.  I ran the DELL Digagnostics and my Hard Drive failed all the tests and I get that message that the S.M.A.R.T. status shows that my hard drive is possibly going to fail and is operating outside normal specifications.

I backed up my data and I am not going to buy a new drive unless this one CRASHES and burns.  That might be 1 day or 1 year, who knows. But, my warranty is expired with Dell since 2 months ago so I am on my own I guess. I cannot call unless I want to PAY THEM!

PS - the funny thing is, my Hard Drive failed the READ test in Dell Diagnostics, yet I am reading files on it constantly by opening files, working in excel, playing music, etc. That is reading isn't it?

Hi pittbull;

Now that is interesting.  So far this hard drive is passing all the tests and shows healthy....very odd.  No virus is found, no pesty spyware or anything messing with the computer...it just decided I have to push the F1 button everytime I start up or reboot.   I guess it's okay as long as that is all the trouble I have with it.  Mine it out of warrenty too so that is a bummer.    My last dell had a hard drive go bad on it but it was under warrenty so that was covered.   No warning on that one - it just went.

I checked in the settings to see if there was anything that would require me to do a manual type start like that but I don't see anything  - just the usual boot sequence.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one that had this happen.  I hope your HD holds keep ticking!

The diagnositics everyone keeps referring to can only find existing problems.  The SMART system is designed to predict hard drive failures before they occur.  Search the forums for much much much discussion of the SMART warning message.  No other diagnostic will check for the same problems.   The drive may failure today or it may fail in a month.  You have to decide if you trust the system or not.  At the very least, take the precaucion of backing up any replaceable data on the drive.

Hi Linda, my computer is 2 and 1/4 years old and I had the 2 year warranty. I have not had a prob with anything to date.

I ran scan disk (chkdsk - checked for bad sectors), defrag, virus, Manged the drive (showed NTFS and healthy). I backed up my data of course. I am just waiting for this baby to stop working...could be a day, could be a year.  This only started a day or two ago.  I was kind of shocked that it said to replace my hard drive immediately - yet I could boot up and operate normally.  I failed all the dell diagnostics however.

I don't like having to hit F1 to boot up but I don't want to get a new hard drive unless I have too.  So, I will just wait and see.
