dvd's play, cd's do not
just picked up a refurb'd dell c600 with toshiba sd-c2502 dvd drive in it. kids played movies on it in back seat while on vacation last week. came with win98 installed, but no cd's. did load word and few others off cd's when first arrived. fri nite, ran win98 update off ms website and had over 40 updates to download. decided yest to purchase a full copy of xp and replace 98 since i have no reload cd. put xp cd in this morn, autoplay doesn't run it, and click d: in my computer prompts a 'device not ready screen. tried few other cd's and same screen. but can put in a dvd movie and will auto launch and run fine.
system shows no conflicts, and driver update says i am running most current driver.
any feedback from one of you experts to a 'knows just enough to be dangerous' appreciated.

The problem I had was that my DVD/CD-ROM, a SD-C2502,
would only play DVD's, same as yours. Data disks and Audio disks
would not be recognized by Windows. I took the DVD/CD-Rom out, removed the alluminium plate that is held on with 3 little screws and inspected it. I found alittle dust on the DIVERTER(?) mirror/lens. I blew if off, cleaned the primary lens. I reassembled it, put it back in the laptop and now it works fine on ALL CD's. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN CLEANING THE PRIMARY LENS. BE VERY GENTLE. If this fixes your problem and if you can Please pass this on. It saved me ALOT of money. Almost forgot, the ERROR Message that I would get, before I fixed it was "WINDOWS CANNOT READ FROM DISK.THE DISK MIGHT BE CORRUPTED OR IT COULD BE USING A FORMAT THAT IS NOT COMPATABLE WITH WINDOWS. I hope this fixed your problem.

thanx for the advice - i will give it a try. unfortunately, i already got another dvd drive to drop in the slot .

Thanks, it worked for me! I was not getting any error message, after putting in the CD, the drive would blink, try to spin, then the light would stay lit but nothing would happen. After "cleaning" it now works fine.
