Hi OMac,
Yes you should have all the necessary CD`s to restore your system. Once you installed the OS, them you needed to install the Intel Chip set drivers next. Click on the Product Support tab above, Select Reinstall Guide, enter information and follow the links.
I would suggest you open the case once more and re-seat the IDE cable going from the motherboard to the back of the drives. It is easier than you might think to loosen one without knowing it when working inside the case.

Best Regards

Hi OMac,

Sorry my friend, I misunderstood your question.
If your CD drive was working before the hard drive failed, then we should assume there is nothing wrong with the drive, hopefully your luck is not that bad !!
The BIOS will detect the drive so you should be fine. If not, then re-seat the IDE cable in case it might be loose. Each set-up is slightly different, your hard drive may have come with instruction guide on preparing it. Depending on your OS, you may need to boot witha floppy disc and your OS CD or change the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the CD-drive with the OS disc, Windows XP disc is bootable.
At the top of this conference on the left, select the Product Support Tab, then drop down to Reinstall Guide, enter information for your system, you should find the Dell instructions on re-installing your Operating system. You might want to post this in one of the Software conferences related to your Operating System, the Regulars there may have some very good tips on the installation and would be glad to help.

Best Regards
