how can I retrieve files from an old hard drive
from an old latitide running windows98 I have the hard drive (
2.160gb Model # DYKA-22160) with some files on it that I would like to recover. basically the rest of the laptop is un-useable so I hope to get some type of enclosure or connector to hook up the HD to my desktop and get the files that way. I looked at a few connectors at a computer shop but they seemed a bit big since the connection on the HD seems to be smaller than normal.
many thanks

You have a couple of options, but be aware that some of the newer external enclosures for notebook hard drives may not hold your drive.
IIRC, the 2.1GB drive you have is a 17mm drive. This means that if you want to buy an enclosure to use it, you would need to get one which will accept a drive that thick. Most enclosures out now only take 9.5mm drives, or maybe 12mm drives.
If you don't want to go with the enclosure for the 2.5" drive, you can go with the 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. That will allow you to connect your drive to any PC which accepts 3.5" IDE disks. You could possibly even connect it to an external enclosure for 3.5" drives using this adapter. That way, when you are finished, you could buy a 120GB drive to put in the enclosure for extra storage.
