Easiest way is the quick restore - CTRL-F11 at boot.

Otherwise:

Back up your data, insert the XP CD, boot the system from it, format and install. Install the chipset driver, and then the other hardware drivers (modem, video, audio, network). Load SP2. Enable the XP firewall, go online and do all critical updates. Load your application software and then finally restore your data.

Try using these procedures.

Power the computer on.

When the black screen with the Dell Logo in the top blue bar appears, press and hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard, then press the F11 key, then release them both at the same time.   The Dell PC Restore by Symantec window should appear.

NOTE: Only press the keys one time, if you press them more than once you will receive a keyboard error and will have to start the process over.

Click the Restore button. A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.
Click the Confirm button. The progress window appears, and when the restore is complete, the message "The system recovery process was  successful" should appear.

Click the Finish button and the computer should restart.

How the Dell PC Restore by Symantec Image can be made unusable,

If you have to carry out a manual reinstallation of XP, make certain that you have the Dell XP reinstallation CD handy.

ReImage= to restore a Disk or partition to a previous state using a image file
Reinstall=using orginal media to restore the PC to the manf load of software or just to windows
Reboot= the process of restarting the computer can be soft or hard reboots

hope that helps
