stop error: inaccessible_boot_device
I start my computer this morning and like half the time it freezes on start. ctrl-alt-del : doesn't work
So I unplug it and restart.
Starting windows...................
Starting up....... when three quarter is done, it stops for about 30 seconds and a blue screen appears
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
***STOP 0X0000007B (0XFCD8DE70, 0XC0000185, 0X00000000, 0X00000000) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
If this the first time you've seen this STOP error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your
hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption,
and then restart your computer.
Refer to your Getting Started manual for more information on troubleshooting STOP errors.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I did try many times, this message is always popping up.
I tried F8 on start up trying to boot in those mode :
safe mode : fails
safe mode command prompt: fails
enable boot logging: fails
last known good configuration: fails
debugging mode: fails
Directory service Restore mode: fails
It seems like there is no way to get in the system.
So I unplug it and restart.

coudon,
Thank you for visiting DELLTalk.
The first thing that I would recommend doing is downloading and running the hard drive diagnostics which can quickly pinpoint most drive failures. The hard drive diagnostic utility can be downloaded
After the file is downloaded, run the file and it will create a single bootable diagnostic disk. After this disk is created restart your system with the disk in the drive. This will bring you to an A:\ prompt. At this prompt type in the following:
HDDCT
This will start the hard drive diagnostics running; this should not take more then a few minutes to run.
If you get the message that the “Identity test” failed, this means that the hard drive in your system does not support this version of the diagnostics and we will have to use a different type of diagnostics.
If you get any other failure, the drive may need to be replaced; in this case, please record the error message and contact Dell Technical Support via e-mail for personalized assistance. DELLTalk< http://inside.us.dell.com/tech/css/techref/
If the hard drive test OK and you have not already done so, you may want to post your message in the Software – Windows Forums (pick the appropriate version of Windows), as you are more likely to get responses to software issues in those Forums.

I was unable to install the latest IDE drivers from Dell webside, I think my floppy is toast, so I'll try with another floppy disk and see what happens...
The floppy boot disk I made per the prev post gave me tumbs up on all tests... so no problems there...
Any other hints???

I encountered this same error after upgrading to Win2k and during the driver updates. the hard drive confidence tests were successful except the message "the manufacturers ID can not be found in hddct.dat"
I can access the C: drive in the windows repair console from the W2k upgrade CD but i cant repair it. Should I suspect the bios?
What next?
Coincidentally, when i originally set up this machine on w98 no matter how many times i made a boot disk that start up warning would not go away.

I have the same problem. Someone formats my new hard drive for me and I brought it home to install and boot, then I have this error.

I also downloaded the Dell diagnostics, ran it and it was successful. When I removed the disk from the floppy, boot again, it reads the above message again. I have Windows 2000.
Could someone please help me.

Hi,
I have exactly the same error msg (.......7b (f88da640, ......34, ...0, .....0) on my 1yr. old Dell 8200 as of two days ago. No safe mode (it begins to list all the system32 drivers then hangs then BSOD), no nothing ....I've tried practically *everything*. :-(
Am about to try a "hddct" diagnostic tool, from Dell, this evening as a last resort before I try reinstalling everything. argh!
Please email me (murray@acm.org) if you come across anything helpful.

(I'll never complain again about the odd windoze error msg!)

Hey guys
I had the same problem when I reinstalled Windows 2000. Turned out to be specific drivers that the hard drive needed during the setup process and a known issue with the type of hard drive I was using. I looked at my hard drive, got the name and model number, went to the manufacturer's website and downloaded the files I needed to a floppy. They also had instructions on how to do it and then update it from a floppy disk.
Good luck with it!

I don't have a dell, but I was googling for an answer to this question, as I've run into it myself.
What's curious about it is, I have my hard drive with w2k installed on it with my old computer and it works fine. I try to plug my harddrive into my new computer (new motherboard) and it gives me this error. I plug my harddrive back into the old computer (old motherboard), again it works fine.
So, at least for me, it's not that my harddrive is corrupted or anything. And it doesn't seem to be a problem with Windows and my harddrive, because it works fine in the old computer. But instead it's some sort of incompatibility of my old harddrive to my new mother board. Or perhaps windows2k running on my new motherboard?
So whichever is the problem, it's very annoying. And I wish there was some sort of definitive solution to solve the problem. But I'll try the manufacturer's drivers and hope for the best I guess. (not sure what else one can do) Reformat??

That worked on 8 machines (I'm an instructor at a college)... Give that a try...
The weird thing is that we have 16 identical machines, with the exact same hardware and some BSOD and some didn't. Oh well... good luck

Try using Win2k with service pk 3. I had this same issue with a D400 and was able to resolve my issue by using this CD.

The same thing happened to me, but on my Latitude laptop. I started my computer and got onto the Internet. It froze and I attempted to access the task manager to end the program. When task manager appeared to be frozen, I shut down my computer (as it was shutting down, task manager finally appeared). When I turned on my computer again, I got (and continue to get) the same screen below.

I don't have a CHKDSK /F disc to run.
I also tried F8 on start up trying to boot in those mode :
safe mode : fails
safe mode command prompt: fails
enable boot logging: fails
last known good configuration: fails
debugging mode: fails
Directory service Restore mode: fails
I called Dell support and they had me remove my hard drive and then put it back in again, but the computer still does not work. They told me I'd have to re-load Windows. Is this true?
Since my Latitude is not operational, I went online from my Optiplex to the Dell Support site to download the diagnostic utilities as suggested in your email reply. The question I have is: can I download the diagnostic utilities onto my Optiplex and then insert the disc into my Latitude and run it? I'm somewhat unsure since the download says it will be to my Optiplex hard drive with just the installation finished by floppy disc. Please advise.

I fixed a customer's Win2000 laptop that came in with this error by:
Removing the hard drive and connecting it to a different, up to date and virus free computer running Windows 2000. As the computer booted up, it prompted to do a chkdsk, which I allowed. I also checked for viruses, but the drive was clean. I also thought that the physical reseating of the hard drive might have done the trick, but Microsoft's Knowledge Base article # 122926 does not discuss this as a resolution to the problem. The chkdsk command is Method 5. Here's the knowledge base link:

I had a similar problem when moving a disk from a Gx110 to a Gx260 (and also to a Gx150 that I tested to verify that it was a case of faulty hardware). The OS would boot and show the inaccessible_boot_device blue screen. In safe mode it showed that the crash happened in/after the Mup.sys line. Recovery mode (tried all) did not work. The chkdsk + fixboot suggested elsewhere in this thread also failed. Uninstalling all drivers from Hardware Manager to force Windows to redetect on next boot failed.
This is the solution that worked for me:
That was it. The crash was gone and I could proceed with updating all the other driver stuff on the new machine the usual way.

I did something similar by putting a known good harddrive with XP on the IDE cable set to cable select and the bad drive on the middle IDE plug set alos to CS. The good drive booted up and when the other drive was checked it went into CHKDSK and was repaired. On another machine however the bad drive was found by CHKDSK to have 5280 errors and never revived. Oh well.
