toshiba cd/dvd player.
Hi. I have been surfing so long, my eyes are going to bleed, so here it is: I bought a used Dell Latitude laptop that has removable CD/DVD Rom. This will play dvd's and factory made data discs, not factory made music cd's, not data CD-R's. When it is deciding which CD's not to play, It sits and whirls. If I go to My computer and click on the d: drive, it tells me device not ready. Same when trying to use the Microsft cd player.
When I go to MS-DOS, the d: command delivers this message "Invalid drive specification"
I have cleaned the lens, blown dust out and even searched the registry for NOIDE, all tips I have found on this huge forum.... But my biggest concern is throwing money at bad money. Do I have to get a removeable floppy drive just to reinstall the cd/dvd drive, and also, do I have to go out and buy extra cords inorder to get this machine operational before Christmas? If anyone has any ideas, fixes, prayers, what ever, give me hit on this forum or with my email address.

Hello,
What is the make and model of drive? You will need to remove three screws, dont lose them, two on top in black cover, and one on the left front side which also holds the cover. Then slide cover towards rear and lift off. You may need to flash the firmware for your model or you can purchase a new one off Ebay. I will post the newest Toshiba model tonight which plays homemade dvd's as well as cdr's. Jerry

Unfortunately when I was trying to tweak the device drivers last night, I erased the original drive's make and model. I know it was a Toshiba, but unfortunately all the Device manager will tell me now is that It is a generic CD-DVD Rom. Is there a way to find out exactly which make and model it is? And your description of the three screws was a bit confusing. Last night I did remove the drive and then removed the silver plate underneath the drive by removing three screws, I air dusted the drive unit and then replaced screws and drive. No avail. I am able to now use a small 128 MB USB flash drive to move software to and from this laptop, is there anything I can download to diagnos this problem? I have been looking at http://forum.rcp1.org and I realize flashing the wrong firmware could be ultra-devastating. Thankyou for your continued support.
