XPS 13 9380

Dell Support Assis told me today that there was a new version and took me to the new version download. it failed without telling me why but just said i have to reboot. after several reboots i removed the old version using windows 11 remove app option and tried again. still wont complete the installation of the new version.

Can anybody Help?

Hi aharown:

While you're waiting for @DELL-Nathalia M to respond, please note that the link they provided in in Step # 1 of their 19-Oct-2022 instructions <here> should re-direct you to the MS support article Fix Problems That Block Programs From Being Installed or Removed. If you click the blue "Download Troubleshooter" button in that support article it should download the correct tool - it's a bit confusing because the first sentence of that MS support article refers to the tool as the "Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter".

Before using Microsoft's Program Install/Uninstall troubleshooter you might want to read the section titled "Method V - Run the Microsoft Install/Uninstall Troubleshooter" of the Dell support article Windows 11, and Windows 10: Various Methods to Uninstall Problematic Programs and Apps for detailed instructions on how to use this tool. If this tool is unable to find and remove the last remnants of SupportAssist from your computer there is also a Dell Tech Support video at Dell SupportAssist Not Installing that includes instructions for manually removing some of the stray registry entries and files that are often left behind when SupportAssist is uninstalled from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.

Also note that DELL-Nathalia M's 19-Nov-2022 instructions were specifically written for installation of SupportAssist v3.12.3.5, and a newer SupportAssist v3.13.0.126 was released on 13-Dec-2022.  If you can't find a .msi installer for SupportAssist v3.13.0.126 see my 21-Jan-2023 comments <above> about using the alternate SupportAssistInstaller.exe stub installer that might be able to download and install the latest available version of SupportAssist once the remnants of your old SupportAssist installation have been wiped off your computer.

Solved! (Windows 11)
Remove all programs related to DELL from the computer settings. Then delete all the contents of the folders:
"%programdata%\Dell" "%programdata%\Dell Inc"
And then install - and it will be installed successfully!

WOW... I have been a Dell user for decades starting when they took over, I believe, Gateway so I'm quite familiar with the idiosyncrasies of Dell's PCs and Laptops over the years. This includes times when their own developed software including support software has had issues. I have recently bought a new XPS17 at no small expense to do video and photo editing and came across this issue of SupportAssist.

I very much like what this laptop has to offer; however, from day one I have experienced issues of the laptop locking up and having several blue screens. Three blue screens within the last 2 weeks. I have never had this issue with a new PC before, including Dell. In the last 5 years I have had only 2 blue screen issues with my current brand of laptop.

By now I had hoped that Dell would have improved, but my recent experience is quite the opposite. Now that I'm retired, I am not interested in being required to do my own troubleshooting especially on a new device. Certainly, not to reset to an old version of .net especially when the issue is part of SupportAssist software development.

I want to get some needed Dell support on these issues before I am forced to return this laptop, this week. I'm fully registered. Let me know how I can get immediate support.

Thank you.

Hi HeyTony:

This is any older thread from Oct 2022 that was discussing problems installing SupportAssist v3.12.3.5 and it has already been marked as "Solved" by the original poster Michael.Strachan. I see you cross-posted your same comments in your 21-Feb-2023 thread Brand new XPS17 issues with locking up, blue screen and update of SupportAssist so I'll reply there shortly.

I have new XPS 8950 with all issues of not being able to install or uninstall programs such as supportassist. Dell support has been helping but unable to solve issue and now want to reinstall 11 Pro after I spent hours setting it up.

Everything they recommend such as uninstall supportassist, or install and uninstall troubleshooter I get error or failed message with error code 0x800706BE

THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN ON NEW SYSTEM! I am waiting for support to help with next steps which may include reinstall fresh window 11 should have bought a Mac.

Although I uninstalled .NET v6.0.16 and replaced it with 6.0.9 as your article suggested, I still receive a 1603 error from DELL when trying to install SupportAssist.

Also, your MSI & MSP links are (404) broken.

Hi bromberg:

This thread was started back in Oct 2022 and the instructions posted <above> by Dell employee DELL-Nathalia M are specifically intended for SupportAssist v3.12.3.5.

The release notes <here> for the latest SupportAssist v3.14.0 (rel. 27-Apr-2023) show that this version now requires "Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 and .NET Core Runtime 6.0.14", so the current MS .NET Runtime v6.0.16 (rel. 11-Apr-2023) should meet the new minimum system requirements for SupportAssist v3.14.0.

Also note that the "Known Issues" section <here> of the SupportAssist v3.14.0 release notes lists a new issue where installation of SupportAssist v3.14.0 can fail "if an empty .NET folder is still present from the previous uninstallation".  The suggested workaround is to manually delete empty folders in the C:\Program Files\dotnet\shared\Microsoft.NETCore.App folder.

I noticed that @DELL-Nathalia M just posted new instructions for performing a clean reinstall of SupportAssist in iamj0mz's June 2018 thread Dell Support Assist Freezing or Crashing. I'm not sure why DELL-Nathalia M chose to post those instructions in iamj0mz's thread on 04-May-2023 when that thread has been dormant for almost 4 years, but it includes a link to a new video called Dell SupportAssist Clean Reinstall (Official Dell Tech Support) that was just added to Dell's YouTube channel about a month ago.

Hi Michael Nicholas:

While you are waiting for DELL-Nathalia M to respond please read my 05-May-2023 post <here>. DELL-Nathalia M posted new instructions for performing a clean reinstall of SupportAssist on 04-May-2023 in iamj0mz's thread Dell Support Assist Freezing or Crashing

The latest SupportAssist v3.14.0 (rel. 27-Apr-2023) now requires Microsoft .NET Runtime v6.0.14 or higher so that is likely why DELL-Nathalia M's link to the Microsoft .NET Runtime v6.0.9 installer in their old 19-Oct-2022 instructions <here> is no longer valid. The official Microsoft download page at https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/6.0/runtime is currently offering Microsoft .NET Runtime v6.0.16 (rel. 11 Apr-2023), which should meet the minimum system requirements for SupportAssist v3.14.0.

What version of Microsoft .NET Runtime v6.x, if any, do you see at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features? From my Inspiron 5584 : ***

Win 10 Pro v22H2 Control Panel MS NET Runtimes Installed 12 May 2023.png

*** Note that I no longer have SupportAssist v3.x installed - I now use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.x to check for Dell software and driver updates.
