Dell SupportAssist: Please wait while we download and install drivers

I have latest version 3.2.1.94

Updates are available but when I try to update, I just get 'Please wait while we download and install drivers', 'Downloading updates x of n ...' but nothing happens.

Never had this before.

What is the difference between Dell Update and Dell SA? When use one vs the other?

Thank you for your message. Please uninstall all application of Dell Support Assist & Dell update (maybe you can use a 3rd party uninstaller application). Complete all Windows update.

Install Dell Support Assist from this link & try updating the drivers again.

Dell update is an application which will install all drivers & firmware required for the system.

Dell Support Assist is a proactive application which will check the health status of both software & hardware on your system along with driver & firmware updates & fixes issues in the background.

For my reference, please click on the message tab next to your avatar– click “New Message” & search for my Dell username (Sreejith R) & send a private message with the service tag, registered name & email address.

How to locate the service tag

Hi

Sent you a PM.

I may give this a try tomorrow, but re '"Complete all Windows update", I have an issue at the moment that Feature Update to v1809 fails. I have hidded the update via wushowhide, but if I check for updates, it does appear.

I was wanting to rather wait for v1903. Though that may fail also!

Would I be able to get Dell Update back also? At least that works!

Yes, you can install the Dell update. We just wanted to check if there is an issue with the software updates.

I will wait for your private message & assist you further.

Before I go ahead ...

Please note that I have already tried completely uninstalling SupportAssist (including ProgramData, etc.) - but not Dell Update also - and reinstalling, but that made no difference.

I've tried all the suggested solutions too and none of them fix the issue.

There are a number of solutions currently from Dell, including a workaround that requires activating the Windows administrator account and installing from there:

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

There's also the suggestion to reset the computer to the Dell factory image but that seems a little drastic just to get Support Assist working again (and it is not confirmed to fix the issue yet so it would be a gamble): https://www.dell.com/support/contents/au/en/audhs1/article/Product-Support/Self-support-Knowledgebase/software-and-downloads/dell-backup-solutions/Media-backup

Hey PeteXPD!

Pleased I am not the only one experiencing this problem. I am also sceptical the solution given will solve the issue, as I have already tried that (other than also uninstalling Dell Update). Mine is further complicated by the fact that v1809 fails via WU or MCT Upgrade at the moment ... not sure if there is any relation (Dell XPS 13 9360, Win 10 Home). My Windows at v1803 is otherwise up to date.

I am inclined to rather try and resolve this issue after v1903 as I may have to do a clean install to install that also.

But please let us know if you have a breakthrough!

Hi Paulerderdash,

I just now got Support Assist to install after messing around a bit. I detailed my steps in this thread: https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist/Inspiron-17-5000-Problem-Support-Assist-is-not-updating-and/m-p/7293502/highlight/true#M87790

I don't know why that worked or if it would work for anyone else. I am using a Dell XPS with almost no applications installed except for some network monitoring so there wasn't much for me to lose if I totally messed up my Windows install. Fortunately it worked for me.

Hi

Thanks. OK, I misunderstood slightly your issue ...

In my case, SA is successfully installed - just when I try and update listed drivers needing updating, they are just stuck on downloading (or validating), but don't actually download.

But maybe the suggested solution of uninstalling SA and Dell Update may do the trick.

Will give it a go when I get a gap.

I am also experiencing this issue. I contacted support but they only gave me links to the current missing drivers and have no idea how to fix this. I am pretty annoyed by this

Hello. I experience the same problem - Support Assist tries to install updates but nothing happens. No downloads, no reaction

I actually think it does download and install the updates because I see some activities.

But I it stays on 'Downloading ...' or 'Validating ...' and never reflects that the updates have taken place.

I went to 'Details', copied the .EXE download name, and downloaded manually from Dell website - but the updates still reflect in SA.

Really poor software, this.

I have the exact same issue, just stuck validating and nothing happens, nothing installs.  Tried reinstalling SA still does the same thing.
