Dell SupportAssist created backup

I just got a notification that Dell SupportAssist had created a backup of some files.

Why did it do that?

We make our own backups and have never asked the system to do that?

How do we turn this functionality off?

Where did it place the backups and how do we remove them?

There's no message or anything in the SupportAssist tool itself

I see triangles in place of YOUR screenshots, too

Try this to see mine:

#1 - Control Panel screenshot

It's interesting that when I see MY reply to you (the one with the actually screenshots), those screenshots show up on my screen.

Although, I pressed the Upload button, maybe they didn't upload.

@DELLKarenBizarrely, the screenshots you uploaded are now visible where they weren't a few hours ago (I also have your Dropbox'd versions).

I can see from the screenshots that you are doing exactly what I suggested but, for some reason, your SupportAssist OS Recovery is bringing up the "insufficient disk space" window, whereas on my PC, it gives me the option to carry out various tasks, including changing the Settings, which is what enabled me to disable the System Repair. I don't know how to resolve that, but perhaps the answer can be found on this forum. (As I'm sure you realise, I am not an IT expert - just another user, offering a suggestion.)

With regard to what I was saying about the Control Panel, the "System and Security" category I mentioned is at the higher level of grouping. You have gone straight to the individual options, so you can ignore the "System and Security" step that I mentioned.

Scarne - Thanks, I was able to turn off SA in the control panel and it showed off when SA was brought up again. Question is, why didn't Dell include that info, or come on here and say so? Lots of wasted time and motion over this.

In Win10, I too first had the "insufficient disk space" screen, but thankfully found what I needed under that.

@XPS-i7-9700  and what or how did you do that you needed to do to fix the "insufficient disk space" screen?  If you posted that, I don't seem to find it.

Thanks.

DellKaren.

I was able to just close that screen or otherwise quickly get behind it. Was easily done so sorry, not very memorable. Of course like they say, results may vary, lol.

DELLKaren, I had the exact same "insufficient disk space" screen when I attempted to access Control Panel -  SupportAssist OS Recovery. This is on a one month old Dell Inspiron 3880 which I have placed very few files on yet. Plenty of space on the SSD.

I just clicked the "Okay" on the screen. The "insufficient disk space" screen disappeared and I was able to get into the System Repair and disable it. I then got the working circle for 10 seconds. Opened Disk Management and my C drive had freed up 18GB!  I do my backups on  an external SSD with Macrium Reflect. I don't need Dell to hog my storage. I'll be checking System Repair regularly to ensure it stays disabled. Hope you get this resolved on your end.

Brilliant @scarne

I do not know how Dell get away with an application (SupportAssist) that will not turn off an option that I didn't want in the first place.

I already do daily backups, and I have Acronis and Kaspersky trying to help with backing up. The difference being that they respect my choice!

Sorry for the late response but,

In control panel go to:

System and Security > SupportAssist OS Recovery

Click on SupportAssist OS Recovery. It will then pop up with administrator box - Click yes.

After that, go to Settings, and disable System Repair

hope that helps

Hi, Unexplained22 I have also downloaded the windirstat and then from ProgramData/ Dell/ UpdateServices and deleted the log. and then uninstalled Dell assist. But I am not able to identify the stuff what are related to these backups. Can you please help me to identify these so that I can uninstall them and then can reclaim the filled memory space again? Thank you
