Dell SupportAsssist v3.7.0.148 "Run All" Breaks Windows Update (Win 10 v1909)
I recently performed a clean reinstall of Dell Support Assist (DSA) v3.7.0.148 (see my 19-Nov-2020 post in Dell Update v3.1.3 Stops at 10% Completion - Will Not Self-Update to v4.0.0 ) and since then a manual DSA "Run All" causes the following problems with Windows Update:
- A few minutes after the DSA scans finish the status of the Windows Security icon in my system tray turns from green (good) to yellow (warning) because Windows Security (Settings | Windows Security | Virus & Threat Protection | Current Threats) reports that the date of my last Windows Defender scan is Unknown. To clear this warning and change my security status back to green I must run a manual Quick Scan.
- Logging of Definition Updates and Other Updates at Settings | Update & Security | Windows Update | View Update History has stopped, and I have not found a workaround for this problem.
For example, my Windows Update | View Update History appears to show my virus definitions were last updated on 22-Nov-2020 ...
...but my Windows Security dashboard (Settings | Windows Security | Virus & Threat Protection | Virus & Threat Protection Updates) shows that my virus definitions are up-to-date as of today (26-Nov-2020).
I'm not sure if the DSA Optimization scan (e.g., Clean Files) is corrupting my Windows Update settings and/or log files but this does not appear to be a one-time glitch. I ran two DSA "Run All" scans on 22-Nov-2020 and 25-Nov-2020 and on both occasions the status of my Windows Security icon to yellow (warning) and reported my last scan date was Unknown until I ran a manual Quick Scan to change the status back to green (good).
I am not certain, but it also appears that the manual DSA "Run All" scan on 22-Nov-2020 stopped my scheduled automatic Windows Updates. Settings | Update & Security | Windows Update stated "You're up to date" but the Last Checked date got stuck at 22-Nov-2020 for several days. To clear this problem I restarted my automatic Windows Updates by running a manual Check for Updates at Settings | Update & Security | Windows Update on 25-Nov-2020, and this manual update found and installed my pending November 2020 Patch Tuesday updates including the KB4586786 cumulative update that changed my OS build to 18363.1198.
