Dell Update stuck on "SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools" update

Dell Update reports there's an update for  "SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools". When I click Install Now, it looks like it installed, but it reports the same update again an hour later (or immediately if I force update check).

I have this problem on two XPS 13 9550's, and this thread shows five other users (and counting) having the problem on machines including XPS 15, Inspiron 15-7569.

Is Dell aware of this installer bug, and will there be a fix? That notification balloon is really irritating.

I've just started getting this too, Vostro 7580 and using Dell Update 3.0.

I was really hoping I'd get to the last page and see a solution. 9570 here. Every time i attempt the install I get "0 out of 1 installed".

New Alienware 17R5 and I have the same issue, it's 2019 and no real information on solving this?  Can someone from Dell please update this with RELEVANT information regarding this issue?

So this is what I did to fix the problem:

1. Installed the Dell OS Recovery Tool ( https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/osiso/recoverytool )

2. Launched the Dell OS Recovery Tool

3. Selected 'This Computer'

4. Selected 'SupportAssist OS Recovery'

5. Selected 'Download'

6. Followed the procedure to create a USB disk (can't imagine you need to do this but I did anyway).

7. Closed the Dell OS Recovery Tool

8. Opened 'Dell Update' and ran an update

Hope that helps.

A full 2 years later and apparently this problem still has not been fixed. It's happening right now on a 2 month old Inspiron 5775.

Ico22,

You can click the link below for information on support assist. Also, if you have Windows 10 installed you may want to read the section on on Windows 10.

The best thing for people to do is to uninstall all pre-loaded Dell bloatware/crapware including the Dell Updater since it's clear Dell employees don't care about actually fixing bugs related to their bloatware/crapware that they pre-load onto all Dell computers. This is still a bug for many people and it's over 2 years later.

I fixed it by searching for Support Assist, right clicking it, choosing App Settings > Repair. Then I launched the app by searching again and left clicking it (not via Windows notification from Dell). After that it started working again.

Had that not worked, I would have tried Reset instead of Repair.

Be aware Support Assist had as security vulnerability that was only fixed today. Get the updated software. Details at https://www.securityweek.com/dell-patches-remote-code-execution-vulnerability-supportassist-client

It seems like this problem flares up about as often as a new season of Game of Thrones comes out....

I have an Inspiron 15-3567 that's barely a month old. I also had a whole *host* of BSOD crash issues that started literally the day after I got it and loaded all of the conventional programs on it (e.g. MS Office suite, etc.) and installed all of the Windows updates and whatnot. It's crashed at least 8 times like that since I've had it (again - only for a month). I couldn't afford to return it because I needed it for university (the semester ended just this week).

I've only now had the chance to back up everything, completely reformat the entire thing and reinstall Windows OS. I've been installing all of the updates as if it was a new computer, and I'm now getting this *same* issue with Dell Update and the SupportAssist app. After the gauntlet I ran through to get this thing working at all, I'll frankly take this being the only error my computer has. At this point, the only thing it's really hurting is my own OCD. That said, if anyone has any other solutions other than those offered in the thread (I've tried them all), I'm all ears.

(I've had my fill of speaking with Dell tech support reps this week.... *sigh*)

The same just happened on my XPS 15 9570. The "Dell Update" tool suggests to update the "SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools". It is labeled as a critical update. However, updating fails, every time.

Eventually I could update. I rarely shut down/restart my computer. I mostly put my computer in Hibernate mode. By restarting and trying to update again, it worked.

I was having similar problems.   No matter how many times I ran it, Dell Update kept reporting that OS Recovery Tools needed an urgent update.     What seems to have worked for me (so far) is to run Dell Update as Administrator.

Click the Start button
Locate Dell Update.
Right mouse click on Dell Update -> More -> Run as Administrator
Follow the prompts.

Good luck.
