Installation of SupportAssist

Recently noticed my Dell Latitude E6540 did not have SupportAssist. Install kept failing with a return code 1603. Support did not help resolve.

I stumbled upon a great software troubleshooting tool from MicroSoft:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/windows-fix-problems-that-block-programs-being-installed-or-removed

Download from the link above, and run the program installed: MicrosoftProgram_Install_and_Uninstall.meta

This presented a list of programs/applications to troubleshoot. Choose SupportAssist.

Ran for about 2 hours, so be patient. Apparently had some Windows 10 Registry issues. Once this troubleshooter  completed, got a report that Registry was fixed.

Install of SupportAssist completed successfully!

Hi @BJEvS :

Thank you for your post.  This certainly helped my situation, kidn of  Still didn't quite fully fix my issue although it is a step forward.

I, too, had issues with installing/updating SupportAssist on my Dell Precision 7540 laptop, and ran into the same Error return code 1603.  I actually had SupportAssist installed previously, but there was an updated version and the update installed failed.  Since then, I haven't been able to install/update SupportAssist, despite it being uninstalled.

The key is to download the Microsoft MSI Installer Troubleshooter.  Mine ran for like 15 mins, (I selected Install --> Dell SupportAssist, and select "Try uninstall"), it completed and showed it fixed corrupted registry entries. Then I tried running the SupportAssistLauncher.exe using "Run as Administrator" (i.e. right-click and select Run as Administrator, and this appeared to run successfully (didn't showed install successfully message but didn't throw up and install failed message either)...

I then visited Dell Support Site (http://support.dell.com), and tried running a diagnostics on my laptop.  This run, rather than asking me to save and run the SupportAssistLauncher.exe again, Dell detected that I had SupportAssist installed and launched it.  However, it still detected a new version available, and proceeded to download and tried installing that version, which failed...  I still can't really use SupportAsisst but at least it seemed to be a step forward.

If anyone have any ideas on how to fix this once and for all it would certainly be great...

Thanks.

Thank you.  The Microsoft tool worked and allowed me to finally install Support Assist.  I was working at it for 2 hours, and was about to give up.

Maybe Dell needs to make a Support Assist Assist app that will take you to Microsoft and run the tool?

After trying to post this thank you message, and having Dell reject it because I spelled their product name as it should actually be spelled ( Support Assist, without the space) , I am afraid that they will not make things easier on anyone in the near future.  Seems it is not in their DNA.

Thanks again,

Doug

I had the same problem on Precision 5820. I have tried several solutions without success. The Microsoft tool resolved the issue and I am able to install SupportAssist. Thank you very much.

When I run this MS tool, I don't have SuportAssist in the list of programs. Does that mean it's not installed on my system? I keep getting a 1603 error when I try to install DELL's SupportAssist.
