Precision 490 randomly powers off

im not sure where else to go with this..
i have never seen anything like it.

I have a Precision 490 that will randomly power off only when something GUI is running..
if the server is running with no one logged in it appears fine.. I can ssh to it and it runs backups via cron without a problem.. If i hook up a monitor and login and then pull up Firefox or virtual-box it just powers off..
i have tried removing the graphic card and sshing to it and then Xforwarding mint-update or virtualbox and it does the same thing, it powers off, randomly..  I even disconnected all the drives and ran linux mint from a USB stick and got it to power-off..

I just ordered a new power supply as i thought that was the problem and it did it again..
ill turn it back on tomorrow and gather some server info to post here.

made some progress.. it appears to be memory related.

i have 4 - 4G sticks ..
I took all of them out except for 1.  the machine was fine...
as soon as i added 1 more, it crashed and powered off..

I have tried multiple DIMMS and it crashes if there are more than one..

Is it safe to assume its the slot?
i also did a mem test from the grub menu back when this started and it claims to have passed.

I have 3 Dell Precision Workstations and 2 of them had problems like you described before and one has problems with the fan that is randomly spinning much to fast and quiet again after a shutdown and restart. To resolve my problems I've done all advises from Dell and the internet such as replacing the cooling paste for all heatsinks plus cleaning all the fan openings but nothing resolves the problem. After a visual inspection of the motherboard I've seen that a lot of the standard elco's were damaged and broken open at the top. These elco's have the values 2200uF and 1500uF 6.3V. After replacing nine or ten of them on every motherboard all problems for two of my pc's were gone only the fan is still spinning to fast sometimes, but I've read that this could be caused by outdated drivers. I'll try to resolve this problem too.
