Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying
There are several posts from last year requesting that SA comes with the option to prevent automatic clearing of the recycle bin. Many of us use the recycle bin to hold onto deleted files for a while in case we need to restore them, it's saved my bacon several times.
In as least one post from last year, Dell said this option would be added but it hasn't been yet. Is this still on the way?
Thanks

I just installed Support Assist 3.10.3.3. It is the latest version as of 2020-08-31. Is the recycle problem fixed in this version? Dell had said it would be fixed in August, 2021.

It's hard to tell. It seems like it empties the bin randomly.

Hi rickhev:
If you wish you can test yourself by running a manual "Tune Performance" scan on the Home tab of SupportAssist.
The release notes for SupportAssist v3.10.4 have now been posted at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs. The New and Enhanced Features section only says "Security and bug fixes". The Known Issues section seems to grow with every new SupportAssist version but has never mentioned the issue where the Recycle Bin is automatically emptied by a "Tune Performance" scan without warning the user.
I'm not going to test if the Recycle Bin is still being emptied by SA v3.10.4 on my own system because I don't want to risk running a "Tune Performance" scan as long as this optimization scan keeps cleaning my Windows registry. An over-aggressive registry cleaner (which the built-in SA registry cleaner seems be - see my 12-Jul-2021 post <above>) can do serious damage and leave your system unbootable, and the support article Microsoft Support Policy for the Use of Registry Cleaning Utilities specifically warns against using third-party registry cleaners to perform this type of wholesale cleaning of all "stray" registry entries. I have disabled all automated SupportAssist update and system optimizations scans [Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers at: | DISABLED] to make sure that these "Tune Performance" scans can't automatically run on my system.

I installed version 3.10.4.18 on 2021-11-30. It appears to be still current. Is this problem fixed in that version?

I have a new Dell laptop. I diligently use 3rd party cleaners, Windows disk/system cleaner and my own batch files to delete all log/tmp/bak files. This morning it says its reclaimed 4.61Gb of space!!
Its also cleaned cookie settings with no control, so my Online Choices and About Ads settings preventing personalised marketing had been cleared.
Dell Eng are clearly not listening to all the fourm posts about this App being a hammer to crack a nut.
Not happy and removing this utility which gives no control over what it does from my laptop.

Hi @Dell-BradL :
You marked this thread as "Solved" on 25-Jun-2021. According to my notes that was just before the release of SupportAssist v3.9.2 in July 2021.
Could you please confirm that SupportAssist has been fixed and that the current version of SupportAssist should not be emptying the the Recycle Bin when it runs the "Clean Files" scan or any other system optimization scan?

Dell won't tell me whether this issue has been fixed because my system is out of warranty. Do you know whether they have fixed it yet?

I don't believe this is fixed and sent Product Managers a reminder. I will note the Recycle Bin shouldn't be emptied if there is under 20 MB

Hi rickhev:
EDIT:
I just saw Dell employee jbilinksi's post <above> so it looks like the problem hasn't been fixed yet. Kudos to jbilinski for letting us know that a Clean Files scan won't empty the Recycle Bin if it's using under 20 MB of disk space. That's something I wasn't aware of before today.
_________________________________________
I ran a manual Clean Files scan from the Home tab of SupportAssist v3.10.4.18 today and the Recycle Bin of my Win 10 Pro OS was not cleaned. You'll have to test on your own system because I don't know if the problem has been permanently fixed by Dell or if my Recycle Bin cleaning was simply skipped by SupportAssist because it currently contains only 3 deleted files that take up less than 10 KB of disk space.
Even if this Recycle Bin problem has been fixed, Clean Files and other SupportAssist system optimization scans are still too aggressive for me (see my post today in Yeffers' How to Stop Support Assistant Clean Files from Deleting Cookies?), especially the registry cleaner in the Tune Performance scan. I've completely disabled SupportAssist so it can't launch at Windows startup and I'm going to continue to use Dell Update v4.x to check for available Dell software and driver updates. For now I'm using Piriform's free CCleaner utility for cleaning disk files so I can control and preview exactly what is going to be cleaned from my system.

@lmacri - I just tested this again and it's the Clean Button panel Not Tune Performance that will remove the recycle bin data if over 20 MB

Hi @jbilinski:
I think you misunderstood my comment. I agree with you that SupportAssist's Clean Files scan will empty the Recycle Bin (at least if it contains over 20 MB of data).
However, I also noted <above> that the Tune Performance scan cleans my Windows registry. Microsoft's official policy at Microsoft Support Policy for the Use of Registry Cleaning Utilities strongly advises against the use of any type of registry cleaner because of the potential harm they can do.
The "Optimizing Your PC" section of SupportAssist for Business PCs with Windows OS Frequently Asked Questions includes a brief description of what each system optimization scan (Clean Files, Tune Performance, Optimize Network) actually does and states that Tune Performance performs the following tasks:

64-bit Win 10 Pro v21H2 build 19044.1586 * Firefox v98.0.1 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.2202.4-1.1.19000.8 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.5.6.180-1.0.1634 * Dell SupportAssist v3.10.4.18 * Dell * Dell Update for Windows 10 Universal v4.4.0 * CCleaner Free Portable v5.90.9443

Hi rickkhev:
Sorry, I just noticed the typo in my old 01-Dec-2021 post <above> and see what jbilinski might have been hinting at.
If you want to test if your Recycle Bin is still being emptied you should run a manual "Clean Files" scan on the Home tab of SupportAssist. Make sure that your Recycyle Bin contains at least 20 MB of deleted files before running your test.
