Problem Updating To SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594

Just reporting that I had difficulty installing the latest Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14594 (rel. 08-Apr-2021) on my Inspiron 15 5584, although the problem finally seems to have resolved itself today. Something like this seems to happen almost every time Dell SupportAssist detects an available update for the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (for example, see my 27-Nov-2020 post on page 4 of Miker5897's Can't Install SupportAssit OS Recovery Tools about my problems installing the v5.2.2.12981 update).

When I started yesterday Control Panel showed I had Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.3.1.13866 (installed 25-Jan-2021).

Three separate manual "Get Drivers & Downloads" update checks with the latest Dell SupportAssist v3.8.1.23 detected one available update for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.3.2.13868. The verification checks ran to completion but each install failed as soon as the download started.

The support page <here> for my Inspiron 15 5584 lists an update for Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14954_A00 released 08-Apr-2021 (note that the full driver details <here> list the Inspiron 15 5584 in the "Applies To" section but there are no previous versions v5.3.1.13866 or v5.3.2.13868 listed under "Version") but when I clicked the blue "Check for Updates" button on that support page and provided my Service Tag it reported that no updates were available.

Finally, a fourth manual "Get Drivers & Downloads" update checks with Dell SupportAssist found and successfully installed the update for SupportAssist OS Tools v5.4.1.14954 (although I had to wait over 15 min for the download to finish) ...

... and today Control Panel finally shows I have the latest Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.4.1.14594 (installed 13-Apr-2021).

I don't know why I always have issues installing updates for the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools, but I wish Dell could find a way to ensure Dell SupportAssist will deliver updates for this software reliably.

Yet another oddity related to my update to SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 on 13-Apr-2021.

I ran Dell SupportAssist v3.8.1 today and it found an available update for the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14954 (released 08-Apr-2021) that was not detected or installed when I was finally able to install the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14954 on 13-Apr-2021 (see my previous post <above>).

Prior to today's installation of the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14954 my Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features showed I still had an older 19.7 MB Dell Update - SupportAssist Update Plugin v5.2.1.12926:

... which is now a 63.5 MB Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14954 after today's update by Dell SupportAssist:

I got the same problem as yours today. The issue is still not solved yet. I even have no idea about it. Whether the update file size is too large and the my connections speed is too low or the Dell program has its own bug.

Hi zxyforever:

I've had even more problems with this SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools update since my last post.

When I launched my Dell SupportAssist (DSA) v3.8.1 on 05-May-2021 it automatically updated to DSA v3.9.0 and the issue started again. DSA v3.9.0 immediately detected an available update for the full 580 MB SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14954 (which DSA v3.8.1 had already installed on 13-Apr-2021 after several failures) and the 05-May-2021 re-installs kept failing with the following error.

DSA v3_9_0_234 SA OS Recovery Tools v5_4_1_15954 Reinstall Failed 05 May 2021.png

After several more re-boots and update failures the SupportAssist OS Tools v5.4.1.14954 reinstall finally ran to completion on 05-May-2021, but this time Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features did not show any change in the version number or install date of Dell SupportAssist Remediation. The only change I could see is that the install date of the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14954 (updated from v5.2.1.12926 to v5.4.1.14954 by DSA v3.8.0 on 24-Apr-2021 per my post <above>) changed from 24-Apr-2021 to 05-May-2021.

Here's a 24-Apr-2021 screenshot from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features after DSA v3.8.1 found and installed a single update for the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14954 (i.e, without a reinstall of the full SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools package) showing:

  • DSA v3.8.1.23 (installed 14-Jan-2021)
  • DSA Remediation v5.4.1.14594 (installed 13-Apr-2021)
  • DSA OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14594 (installed 24-Apr-2021)

Dell Installed Programs Control Panel 24 Apr 2021.png

... and here's a 05-May-2021 screenshot after DSA 3.9.0 reinstalled the full SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 package, which changed the install date (but not the version number) of the DSA OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14594 from 24-Apr-2021 to 05-May-2021.

  • DSA v3.9.0.234 (installed 05-May-2021)
  • DSA Remediation v5.4.1.14594 (installed 13-Apr-2021)
  • DSA OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14594 (reinstalled 05-May-2021)

On my Dell laptop the latest update did make quite a damage.

First, the update did not warn that it would create a new partition.

Then, it obviously deleted my data partition (D:) and hanged at 1/4 of the install process.

It took me 6 (six!) hours to repair the damage with my latest (4 day-old, luckily...) backup.

Thank you for the nice Sunday afternoon.

This is just outrageous!

Hi georgiev209:

Thank you for your feedback, and sorry to hear about your data loss. I also recall seeing an odd message about "creating a new partition" when DSA v3.9.0 tried (and repeatedly failed) to reinstall the full 580 MB SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 package on 05-May 2021. Luckily, my D:\ drive is a removable USB backup drive that was not connected to my Inspiron 5584 at the time so I don't think any files were damaged.

Hi georgiev209:

I just noticed that balji has reported a similar issue in their 09-May-2021 thread SupportAssist Deleted My Partitions While Installing OS Recovery over in the Inspiron board.

Hi gerogiev209:

We have another user reporting damage to a hard drive partition during the update to SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 - see Salah 1's 16-May-2021 SupportAssist OS Recovery Can't Install.

I wonder how many more people will be affected by this bug before Dell finally pulls this update from their servers?

Wow this is almost precisely what happened with me. I simply deleted SupportAssist altogether. Also completely wiped my D disk btw. I had an old backup which was fine but I still lost my newer data. Extremely disappointed in SupportAssist.

SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool is no longer available as an update through SupportAssist, Dell Update, or support.dell.com. Instead, it can be downloaded from here:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/osiso/recoverytool

Further documentation can be found here:

It is probably a waste of bandwidth to issue a nearly 1 GB operating system image that will be outdated in a matter of months, and b/c SAOSRT now has the option to download the most recent OS version anyway.

From Dell Update the missing update can be observed as follows:

Hi samus1:

This topic was created in April 2021 about a specific problem with the installation of the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594. Dell pulled the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 from their download servers after several users reported a serious bug where disk partitions higher that C:\ drive could be deleted during installation, and SupportAssist eventually delivered a new SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.15135 to my Inspiron 5584 in July 2021 . See my 30-Jul-2021 post in balji's SupportAssist Deleted My Partitions While Installing OS Recovery for additional details.

For other users following this thread, a longer discussion about the differences between the Dell OS Recovery Tool v2.x available at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/drivers/osiso/recoverytool (a small 22 MB utility that can be used to create a bootable USB thumb drive and restore the factory-installed operating system) and the full SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.x [optional software delivered via SupportAssist or Dell Update that creates daily system repair points (snapshots) in a hidden folder on your hard drive] is available in Miker5897's Can't Install SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools, starting with my 26-Sep-2021 post <here>.
