SupportAssist and Win 11 upgrade

I have a Dell Inspiron 3583 laptop. I just upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. I then ran SupportAssist (I think it's version 3.11.4), which was already installed and working correctly with Windows 10 on my computer. It seemed to work fine with Windows 11, but it deleted a very large number of Windows registry files. It didn't find any updates. I'm now wondering if it thinks I still have Windows 10 and it deleted the Windows 11 registry files. Was I supposed to reinstall SupportAssist after upgrading to Windows 11? Is there a different version of SupportAssist for Windows 11? Or does SupportAssist recognize automatically that I now have Windows 11?

Hi Imacri,

Thanks for letting me know about the most recent update for Dell Update for Windows Universal. Do you think I should install it manually, or wait to see if Dell Update will update automatically to the most recent version?

I launched SupportAssist today, and Get drivers & downloads worked, but Scan hardware got stuck at 89%, so I had to cancel it. But then I tried it again and it worked. I haven’t tried Remove viruses & malware. Also, I disabled the automatic background scanning on SupportAssist when you had suggested it back in October.

Dell Update is also working, though my Dell Update screen looks a little different than yours (it has "System Information" and "Licenses" under "Last Update"), which makes me wonder if it is Dell Update for Windows Universal, or the old Dell Update. Also, Sept. 30, 2022 was the last time I installed an update through Dell Update. I’m just surprised though that it would list it because in the past when Dell tech support uninstalled and then reinstalled Dell Update, when launched it would say "Last Update: never". I installed Dell Update for Windows Universal on Nov. 5, 2022.

I forgot to mention that I did not install that Dell firmware update on Windows update. Thank you for your advice. I am worried though, because prior to that update, I had been installing all the optional Windows updates, including the driver/firmware updates. I’m wondering now if that harmed my computer.

I am also worried about all the updates SupportAssist failed to install since I bought the computer in January of 2021. Many of the updates were critical ones.

Hi RedheadedCelt:

It's your choice, but if your Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.0 is working again then I personally wouldn't bother running the new v4.7.1 installer for now, given all the problems you've had recently with this app.  The v4.7.1 release notes don't mention any patches for security vulnerabilities and it's only rated as "Recommended", not "Critical", so I'm in no rush to update.

Also be aware that Dell appears to be pushing out a new Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.5.16201 update (listed as Dell SupportAssist Remediation in Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features) that's not installing correctly on some machines. These Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools updates are huge (>350 MB) and can take well over 15 min to finish installing (or sometimes just fail to install) on my Inspiron 5584. - see my post today in marksprowl's SUPPORT ASSIST UPDATE 5.5.5.16201 FAILS.

When something goes wrong with a SupportAssist scan the first thing you should check is the Recent Activity log on the History tab. That might tell you where your hardware scans are getting stuck, or what updates are failing.

... Update is also working, though my Dell Update screen looks a little different than yours (it has "System Information" and "Licenses" under "Last Update"), which makes me wonder if it is Dell Update for Windows Universal, or the old Dell Update. Also, Sept. 30, 2022 was the last time I installed an update through Dell Update. I’m just surprised though that it would list it because in the past when Dell tech support uninstalled and then reinstalled Dell Update, when launched it would say "Last Update: never". I installed Dell Update for Windows Universal on Nov. 5, 2022....

Mine also has a "System Information" link. My previous image just didn't show the full interface. If Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features says you have "Dell SupportAssist for Windows Universal" (and not just "Dell Update") then you have the UWP app.

Dell Update for Windows Universal v4_7_0 Interface System Information Link 26 Nov 2022.png

If Dell tech support performed a clean reinstall of Dell Update (or Dell SupportAssist) they likely removed the old log files in hidden folders like C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdatePackage\log (where .txt logs for individual updates are stored) and C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdateService\Log\Activity.log at the same time. After a clean reinstall the "Last Update" date in the Dell Update interface will say ""Never" because all the old installation logs have been deleted and it has no record of what updates were previously installed. Here's an old screenshot I captured of Dell Update v3.1.2 back in June 2020 after a clean reinstall.

Dell Inspiron 5584 Dell Update v3_1_2 Last Check Never System Info Error 18 Jun 2020.png

If you install updates manually using an .exe installer downloaded from your Inspiron 3583 support page then installation will not be detected by apps like SupportAssist or Dell Update because the installation log for standalone .exe installers are not stored in the "standard" location where those apps normally save their logs. As my first image above shows, my "Last Update" date of 30-Sep-2022 was for the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update 5.5.4.16189 that was downloaded and installed by either Dell Update or SupportAssist (I can't remember which) on my Inspiron 5584, but the the Dell Inspiron 5583 / 5584 BIOS 1.21.0 I installed manually with a standalone .exe installer on 10-Oct-2022 isn't reflected in the "Last Update" date of my Dell Update interface, and there's no record of that BIOS update in my SupportAssist Recent Activity log. My Dell Update v4.6.0 self-updated to v4.7.0 on 02-Nov-2022, but there's no log of that update in Dell Update or SupportAssist as well.  As I said before, I don't even pay attention to that "Last Update" date in my Dell Update interface as long as the installer reports that my update finished successfully and Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features (or my System Information panel, in the case of BIOS updates) shows I have the expected version.

Hi RedheadedCelt:

Yet another FYI that I launched SupportAssist v3.12.3.5 today and it auto-updated to v3.13.0.236. The v3.13.0 release notes have already been published at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs (thankfully, the minimum system requirements <here> haven't changed and still say Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 and .NET Core Runtime 6.0.9 are required). I currently have Microsoft .NET Runtime v6.0.11 and the auto-update finished successfully, although it took almost 10 minutes for the installer to run to completion on my Inspiron 5584. I ran manual "Get Drivers & Downloads" and "Scan Hardware" scans from the Home tab of SupportAssist v3.13.0.236 and both ran okay, and SupportAssist is now recommending a 209 MB update for Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.5.16206 (which I haven't installed yet).

I should also note that my Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.0 detected and installed the latest v4.7.1 update on 30-Nov-2022. There was a minor glitch because Dell Update had to close in order to apply the self-update and wouldn't relaunch until I re-started the disabled Dell Client Management Service, but I think that was my own fault because I didn't enable the "Automatically Restart System (when required)" check box shown in the image below. If I had enabled that check box I assume my system would have automatically re-booted and restarted the Dell Client Management Service on it's own. Regardless, Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 now seems to be working as expected on my Inspiron 5584.

As of today my Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 still says my "Last Update" date is 30-Sep-2022.

Hi Imacri,

Thanks for letting me know about the new versions of SupportAssist and Dell Update. I haven't checked for them yet (I probably will tomorrow).

I have two quick questions about installing the new version of Dell Update. First, you said Dell Update needs to close to install the new version - do I need to close it manually, or does it close automatically? Second, how do I restart Dell Client Management Service, if needed (although I will be sure to enable the automatic restart)?

I also have two questions about the auto-update for SupportAssist. Do I launch SupportAssist to install the new version? Then what do I do, or rather, what do I see to be able to tell it's installing the new version, and to be able to tell when it's finished?

Hi RedheadedCelt:

My update to SupportAssist v3.13.0.236 behaved just like previous updates on my Win 10 laptop. I happened to run my free SUMo utility on 02-Dec-2022 and it reported a new SupportAssist v3.13.0.236 update was available ...

SUMo v5_16_3 Dell SupportAssist v3_13_0_236 Available 02 Dec 2022.png

... so I closed SUMo, launched SupportAssist v3.12.3.5, and went to Options (gear icon) | About. This triggered an automatic update check for SupportAssist, and I saw a pop-up asking if I'd like to update SupportAssist.

Dell SupportAssist v3_12_3 Ready to Install v3_13_0 02 Dec 2022.png

I clicked "Yes, continue" to start the installation, and then waited for at least 10 or 15 minutes for the installer to finish. Note that the installer, as always, was very slow and appeared get stuck or loop a few times during the download and installation, so be patient.

SupportAssist v3_11_4 Updating Your Software EDITED 11 Oct 2022.png

After the installer reported it successfully finished the install (sorry, I don't have a screenshot) I recall I just clicked Finish (or Close, or OK, or whatever the button was labeled) and the SupportAssist v3.13.0.126 interface opened automatically.

When I checked the next day at Control Panel | Programs | Programs it showed Dell SupportAssist v3.13.0.126, Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.4.16189 (which I had previously installed on 30-Sep-2022) and Dell SupportAssist Remediaton v5.5.5.16206 (a.k.a. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools) had all been installed on 02-Dec-2022, so I suspect my SupportAssist v3.13.0.236 installer also updated some components of my Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery software from v5.5.4.16189 to v5.5.5.16206 at the same time, which is probably why my SupportAssist installer ran so slowly.

I have two quick questions about installing the new version of Dell Update. First, you said Dell Update needs to close to install the new version - do I need to close it manually, or does it close automatically?

The comments I posted <above> about the glitch I encountered with my update to Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 on 30-Nov-2022 only apply if you use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.0 to install the update, rather than using SupportAssist v3.x or just downloading installer (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_0991N_WIN_4.7.1_A00.EXE, rel. 24-Nov-2022) from the support page <here> for your Inspiron 3583 and running the installer manually. I don't know why the image I posted in my previous reply showing the "Automatically Restart System (when required)" check box is still in moderation so I'll re-post it below and hope it displays correctly this time.

Dell Update v4_7_0 Update v4_7_1 Detected EDITED 30 Nov 2022.png

When the installation finished the installer automatically closed the interface.  I was expecting the interface to open automatically once the installer finished applying the update, but it never did (or maybe I was too impatient and didn't wait long enough).  That's why I suspect a re-boot was required to finish the installation.

Dell Update v4_7_0 Update v4_7_1 App Will Close 30 Nov 2022.png

...second, how do I restart  Dell Client Management Service, if needed (although I will be sure to enable the automatic restart)?

You can check your services as I described at the bottom of my 13-Nov-2022 post <here> on page 3 of this thread. Open your Windows Services app (see the MakeUseOf article 7 Ways to Open the Services App in Windows 11) and if the Status of the Dell Client Management Service is not "Running" as shown below then just re-boot your computer, which should automatically restart the service (see Note 1). If you re-open your Services app after the re-boot and the service still hasn't automatically restarted the service then you can select the service and click "Start this service" (see Note 2).

Win 10 Pro v21H2 Services Dell Client Management Service Not Running Example 04 Dec 2022.png

Note 1: This assumes the Startup Type is set to "Automatic" or "Automatic (Delayed)" and you've disabled the Fast Startup power option as I suggested at the bottom of my 09-Nov-2022 post <here> on page 3 of this thread.  If Fast Startup is not disabled the service might not start automatically after a re-boot.

Note 2: This assumes the service does not have a StartType of "Disabled".  If the service is Disabled then double-click to open the Properties, change the Startup Type back to "Automatic (Delayed)" from the dropdown list, and then click Apply to save the changes.  Once the Startup Type is changed back to "Automatic (Delayed)" to you will be able to start the service.

Hi Imacri,

I launched SupportAssist today, and to my surprise, it had already auto-updated to v3.13.0.236. I ran Get drivers & downloads, and it found two – Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 and SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (I think it was v5.5.5.16206). Both installed successfully, but a reboot was required for Dell Update for Windows Universal. After my computer restarted, I launched SupportAssist again, and ran Scan hardware, and it worked (although there was a minor glitch).

Then I launched Dell Update, but it still said it was v4.7.0! It did say the last check and the last update were today though. What do you think I should do?

I also wanted to mention that the optional Windows update – Dell, Inc. – Firmware – 0.1.20.0, that you advised me not to install (and I didn’t install it), installed automatically today – there was no way to stop it.

Hi Imacri,

Please read my post above this one. I don’t think Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 installed correctly using SupportAssist. I checked for updates through Dell Update, and it said there was a new version of Dell Update for Windows Universal available. I enabled automatic restart. Then it said it needed to close, so I clicked on “Close” (there were only “Check” and “Close” as options, and it didn’t close automatically, so I clicked on “Close”). I waited and nothing happened. I checked Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features and Dell Update wasn’t there! Then I checked Settings | Apps |Installed Apps and it wasn’t there either. I searched for Dell Update and it doesn’t exist on my computer anymore.

Update: I waited and just searched for Dell Update again, and it was there! I launched it and it said v4.7.1. My computer didn’t restart. I don’t know what happened. It’s also listed under Settings | Apps | Installed Apps and Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features again.

HI RedheadedCelt:

If you open your Windows Task Scheduler you will likely find a scheduled task that runs once a week and will silently auto-update SupportAssist if an update is found, assuming your computer is powered on (and I presume, is not in sleep or hibernation mode) when the task runs. Note that the Last Run Result of my scheduled task always has a run code of 0x8 (Failed) because I normally have my Dell SupportAssist and Dell TechHub services disabled to prevent SupportAssist from automatically launching on my Inspiron 5584 at boot-up.

Win 10 Pro v21H2 Task Scheduler Dell SupportAssist AutoUpdate Task 05 Dec 2022.png

I think SupportAssist also checks for an available update for the app every time you manually launch it.

...Then I launched Dell Update, but it still said it was v4.7.0! ...
...Update: I waited and just searched for Dell Update again, and it was there! I launched it and it said v4.7.1. My computer didn’t restart. I don’t know what happened.

That sounds similar to what happened to me when I tried to use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.0 to self-update to v4.7.1 (i.e., after the installer ran to completion there was no shortcut to launch Dell Update from my Start menu and the app seemed to disappear from my system for several minutes) so there must be some glitch in the v4.7.1 installer. When Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 eventually reappeared on my system I saw the error below the first time I tried to launch the app, which is why I suggested you check the status of your Dell Client Management Service if anything went wrong with your update to v4.7.1.

Dell Update v4_7_0 Update v4_7_1 Client Management Service Disabled 30 Nov 2022.png

The good news is that Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 seems to be working on both of our systems for now. I've never had problem installing updates for my Dell Update for Windows Universal app before so hopefully this glitch in the installer will be fixed before the next release.

... I also wanted to mention that the optional Windows update – Dell, Inc. – Firmware – 0.1.20.0, that you advised me not to install (and I didn’t install it), installed automatically today – there was no way to stop it.

Just out of curiosity, what is the BIOS version and date currently shown in the field named "BIOS Date/Version" when you open a Run dialog box (Windows + R keys) and  enter msinfo32 to open your System Information panel?

You said in your 23-Oct-2022 post <here> a Dell support rep used Dell Update to install Dell Inspiron 3480/3580/3583/3780 BIOS v1.20.0 (rel. 08-Aug-2022) during a remote access session so I'm not sure why Windows Update (or perhaps SupportAssist??) thought it was necessary to reinstall v1.20.0 on your Inspiron 3583, especially when a newer Dell Inspiron 3480/3580/3583/3780 BIOS v1.21.0 (rel. 26-Oct-2022) is the recommended BIOS version on the support page <here> for your Inspiron 3583. If SupportAssist v3.13.0 or Dell Update v4.7.1 eventually recommend you update your BIOS to v1.21.0 just be sure to decline the update in those apps and re-read the last two paragraphs of my 31-Oct-2022 post <here> about safer methods for updating your BIOS firmware.

For now, I'd suggest you monitor your system performance with the BIOS v1.20.0 and not worry about updating to BIOS v1.21.0 just yet.

Hi Imacri,

I'm sorry for my long silence. I was very ill with severe COVID. I'm feeling much better now.

I checked my BIOS Version/Date and it's v1.21.0, 9/20/2022, so apparently that firmware update that installed through Windows Update wasn't a BIOS update, or perhaps it didn't actually install after all.

Hi Imacri (or anyone else who can help me),

I launched SupportAssist today and when I ran Get drivers & downloads, it found a recommended update for the Qualcomm WiFi and Bluetooth Driver. I downloaded it and it installed correctly. But then I launched Dell Update, and it found a critical update for the Qualcomm WiFi and Bluetooth Driver dated 6/17/21. Should I install it? Why did Dell Update find that update after I had just installed the one in SupportAssist? I would appreciate any help anyone could offer.

I wanted to add to my above post. I went to the support page for my computer and ran an automatic search for updates. It found that same update for the Qualcomm WiFi and Bluetooth Driver that Dell Update found. So I downloaded and installed it. It said I should restart my computer and I did. It also said Device Manager should show that my Qualcomm QCA9377 was v12.0.0.1118 (dated 6/17/21), but I went to Device Manager and it said my Qualcomm QCA9377 was v10.0.0.1118 (dated 5/19/21). Does anyone know why that is? Did I download the wrong version of the update (the version for Win 10 instead of Win 11)? The support page for my computer thinks I still have Win 10 (when I do a manual search for drivers, it says I have Win 10).

One more thing to add to the above two posts:

Device Manager | Bluetooth | Qualcomm QCA9377 Bluetooth | Properties | Events says "Device not started (BTHUSB)" and under Information it says "Device USB\VID_0CF3&PID_E009\5&2507ebf&0&10 requires further installation." Can anyone help me with this?

Hi RedheadedCelt:

I'm not a hardware expert so you might have to wait for someone else to jump and provide assistance on this, but I don't think you have to worry about the "Device not started (BTHUSB)" event logged during the installation of your Qualcomm QCA9377 drivers. I installed my QCA9377 drivers on 23-Apr-2022 and when I checked today I can see that a similar event was logged during installation.

Inspiron 5584 Qualcomm QCA9377 Bluetooth Event BTHUSB Not Started 16 Jan 2022.png

I found a Computer Hope article <here> that states that bthusb.sys is the generic Microsoft Windows Bluetooth miniport driver that comes with your Windows operating system. Do you have any Bluetooth devices (e.g., a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, headphones, etc.) paired to your computer at Settings | Devices | Bluetooth & Other Devices, and if so are they all working correctly since you updated your Qualcomm drivers?

I don't have any Bluetooth devices paired to my Inspiron 5584 so I've deliberately disabled Bluetooth (see the "Bluetooth Security" section of the FCC article Wireless Connections and Bluetooth Security Tips that recommends that you "Turn Bluetooth off when not in use. Keeping it active enables hackers to discover what other devices you connected to before, spoof one of those devices, and gain access to your device") so my Bluetooth settings look like this:

...It also said Device Manager should show that my Qualcomm QCA9377 was v12.0.0.1118 (dated 6/17/21), but I went to Device Manager and it said my Qualcomm QCA9377 was v10.0.0.1118 (dated 5/19/21). Does anyone know why that is?...

Hi RedheadedCelt:

If I go to the support page <here> for your Inspiron 3583 and choose either 64-bit Win 10 or Win 11 as the operating system it recommends the same driver package (Qualcomm-QCA61x4A-QCA9377-Wi-Fi-and-Bluetooth-Driver_YX23Y_WIN_12.0.0.1118_A47_03.EXE, posted 02-Mar-2022) for the QCA9377 chip that combines 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 5. If you expand the section for that driver package it notes that the YX23Y installer includes Wi-Fi driver v12.0.0.1118 and Bluetooth driver v10.0.0.1238.

I have the same Qulacomm QCA9377 chip on my Inspiron 5584. When I open Device Manager my Qualcomm QCA9377 Wi-Fi driver is listed under "Network Adapters" while my Qualcomm QCA9377 Bluetooth driver is listed under "Bluetooth". Don't worry that the driver dates are different in Device Manager - the 02-Mar-2022 date on your support page is the date the Dell certified and released the YX23Y driver package for your Inspiron 3583, while the Driver Dates shown in Device Manager are the dates that Qualcomm released the drivers to the general public.

If you click the "View full driver details" link on your support page that should open the full release notes <here>. If you read the section titled "Installation instructions" it says "Your system requires a restart after installing the driver. The restart can be deferred but must be completed to ensure that the update is installed" so be sure you always restart your computer after installing updates for your  Qualcomm QCA9377 drivers to complete the installation.

...The support page for my computer thinks I still have Win 10 (when I do a manual search for drivers, it says I have Win 10)....

If you're downloading updates from the support page for your Inspiron 3583 make sure that you enter your unique Service Tag on the Overview tab <here> first so that the Drivers and Downloads tab only displays drivers that match your hardware components.  When I manually install drivers from my Inspiron 5584 support page I always save the .exe installer to my desktop, right-click the .exe file, and choose "Run as Administrator" as an added precaution just to make sure the installer has sufficient privileges.  I haven't upgraded to Win 11 yet so I'm not sure if your Dell support page should automatically detect your Win 11 OS, but if it doesn't just remember to manually change the OS to "Windows 11" before searching for available updates.

I wanted to make a correction to my above post, but I couldn't edit it for some reason. I looked at your posts again and noticed that the dates of my drivers (both the Bluetooth and Wireless Adapter) in Device Manager match yours. Is there any need for me to download and install the latest Qualcomm QCA9377 driver update that you posted, the one that's listed on the manual search on my Dell support page?
