"Successful Application Reconfiguration" and SupportAssist
Every day several times a day, I see "Successful Application Reconfiguration"s in the Reliability Monitor for all of my Windows 10/Pro apps. These informational events can number up to 1300 of them in a day, depending on how many times this set of events is triggered. It all has to do with the operation of SupportAssist. If SupportAsssist is not installed, these events do not occur. But, when they do occur because SupportAssist is installed, it reduces the Reliability Monitor Stability Index to 1 and decreases performance. There is some kind of incompatability between SupportAssist and other actions of Windows 10 that is causing these Reconfiguration events to occur. It is not normal behavior (although a Dell agent tried to convince me that it is). There is something about SupportAssist that causes this problem. The SupportAssist Team needs to investigate it. I do not want to solve the problem by uninstalling SupportAssist. I want the Dell SupportAssist team to solve this problem by fixing SupportAssist so that it does not cause a "Successful Application Reconfiguration" event.
See https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/XPS-8930-SupportAssist-and-Reliability-Monitor/m-p/7310226#M87983 for a report that uninstalling SupportAssist solves the problem.

The image for the error message is blank.
I had no problems regarding SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools 580 MB 5.4.14954 – well maybe you could say I did on one of my machines-the 7569, but it was resolved with a RESTART.
Here’s an account:
The Inspiron 5482: DSA 3.8.1.23 was already installed so it updated to 3.9.243 on May 5. No settings were changed and the 90-day History was still there. There were no Drivers and downloads updates. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update now has a date of 05/05/2021, but it is the same size and version as it was before the update (63.6 MB, version 5.4.14954). Dell Support Remediation is unchanged – it is 93.0 MB and has the date on which Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (5.4.14954) was first installed on April 11.
The Inspiron 7569: DSA 3.8.1.23 had been un-installed April 24 to see if the “reconfigurations” would go away. Of course, they did not. So, I re-installed it on May 5 with the new version 3.9.243.
I did not restart the 7569 after the download and re-installation. So, there was a bit of a kink -- SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools 580 MB 5.4.14954 was reported as a new update waiting to be installed. I tried to install it, but it failed with a message to “RESTART and try the update again”. And, after the RESTART, it was no longer reported as an available update (since it had already been installed April 11)..
So, the two machines turned out the same, both now with the newest version, one having automatically updated DSA and other having had DSA downloaded and installed. But, the 7569 had default settings so they had to be changed so that there would be no automatic scan and optimization. I expected that since it was a new installation. I also left the default “on” for System Repair, since I am going to try disabling the Dell SupportAssistRemediation service first.
Of course, at the moment, I still have the “reconfigurations” because I haven’t tried disabling the Dell SupportAssistRemediation service yet. Nor have I tried unchecking System Repair yet. I’m going to try TreeSize free first to see what hidden backup files I might have. Thanks for the lead on this.

Hi DELLKaren:
One quick hint about using TreeSize Free. The C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ folder is a hidden folder, so if you have problems viewing files inside that folder with TreeSize open File Explorer and change the folder view to show hidden files. From my Win 10 v20H2 machine:
After that you should be able to browse through everything in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ with TreeSize. You can hide your system files again in File Explorer after that, because the next time you open TreeSize you can use the shortcut in the list of Recently Scanned folders to go directly to that C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ folder.

I have System Repair turned on in DSA, with the maxium of 18GB selected. Thanks for the info on how to get to the System Repair directory using TreeSize Free. Here is my screen, taken today just after I read this, your most recent reply. (By the way the time-stamp on the message is 3 hours behind my EST time zone). The TreeSize Free display looks a bit different from yours, because I see the Snapshots folder and the Backup folder, both of which I can open to see files within. The bulk of the System Repair folder is taken up by the Backup folder (15,9 GB -- 95.7%). Maybe, the difference is due to your having System Repair turned off?
I can identify the dates of the files in the Backup folder. 05/05/2021 and 05/04/2021 (blue star) is the day and 2 days before the date of the screenshot. 04/09/2021 (red star) is the day on which I upgraded to 20H2. 07/15/2020(red square) is the date on which DSA 3.6.0.97 was automatically installed. This might be the version in which the System Repair feature was included in DSA. 07/03/2020 (green square) is the release date of SupportAssist OS Recovery tools version 5.1.3.11985, which was installed on 07/15/2020, right after DSA 3.6.0.97 automatically installed.
So, if System Repair is turned off, most of these files will disappear and will no longer show up in TreeSize Free, right?

Hi DELLKaren:
When I disabled System Repair in my DSA v3.8.1.23 settings on 04-May-2021 I saw the warning shown in the image below that says "When System Repair is turned off, we'll remove any backups we created for you and free up any hard drive space that they used. You can turn System Repair back on at any time if you'd like to back up important system files again.". Note that you can click the "No, Cancel" button if you want to back out and leave System Repair enabled.
Based on that warning I expected all the files and subfolders in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots to be purged when I disabled System Repair, but that didn't happen. I don't know if this is another bug in System Repair and DSA SupportAssist Remediation or if the backups referred to in the above warning are located somewhere other than C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\.
I currently have System Repair turned back on using the default 15 GB of disk space and my C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ doesn't look that much different than yours. I now have 17 backup folders in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ dating back to 18-Apr-2021 (versus your 3 dating back to 04-May-2021) and the files in my C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots\Backup folder only account for 70.6% of C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ (vs your 95.7%). Your TreeSize screenshot just looks different than mine because you've expanded the C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots\Backup folder.
See my old 02-May-2021 TreeSize image <here> when C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots\Backup accounted for 66.1% of C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\.

Hi DELLKaren:
Just a warning that my new DSA v3.9.0.234 is behaving differently than DSA v3.8.1.23. If you're going to test you must now ensure that the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service is manually disabled (i.e., go to Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services, right-click the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service and choose Properties, change the Startup Type to "Disabled" and re-boot).
So far, preliminary tests with DSA v3.9.0.234 with my Inspiron 5584 show that disabling System Repair in the DSA settings (Settings | System Repair | System Repair is Turned On | DISABLED) does not stop the flood of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events in the Win 10 Reliability Monitor (and does not automatically disable the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service). However, if I manually change the Startup Type of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service to "Disabled" in the Windows Services and re-boot, this will still stop the flood of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events.
My DSA v3.9.0.234 appears to be behaving oddly since it was updated on 05-May-2021. For example, I always have Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers at: DISABLED to prevent DSA from running automatic background scans but the Home and History tabs indicate I ran two manual checks for updates on 06-May-2021, which I don't remember doing. I don't know if my DSA was corrupted during the 05-May-2021 update and needs a clean reinstall or if it has a bug that Dell needs to fix, but for now I'm just going to monitor and see if it continues to behave oddly.

Inspiron 5482: Yes, I manually disabled Dell SupportAssist Remediation today May 7 at 9:13 AM (System Event 7040) and restarted, about two days after the new DSA v3.9.0.234 automatically installed on May 5 at 2:54 PM. So, far, I haven't seen anymore "reconfigurations" in the Reliability Monitor (or Event 1035 in the Event Viewer), but it was only about 3 hours ago, so it's a bit early to tell if it will stick. I still have DSA System Repair turned on.
Inspiron 7569: I manually disabled Dell SupportAssist Remediation and restarted a day ago on May 6 at 11:41 AM (System Event 7040), which is about a day after I manually re-installed the new DSA v3.9.0.234 on May 5 at 9:16 PM. So far, I haven't seen anymore of those "reconfigurations" in the Reliability Monitor (or Event 1035 in the Event Viewer). It's been two days now and it looks the disablement has had an effect. I still have DSA System Repair turned on on this device, as well.
Inspiron 5482 (where DSA updated automatically): I, too, now notice that soon after DSA automatically updated at 2:54 PM, the History tab shows two manual D & D scans, one at 2:55:56 PM and the other at 3:13:59 PM. I, too, don't think I initiated these manual scans. In fact, although DSA automatically updated at 2:54 PM, as a matter of fact (in contrast to what I said previously), I don't think I even opened DSA until shortly before I wrote that note to you at 6:45 PM on May 5 to tell you about the new version of DSA. The automatic update of DSA, however, did leave my settings alone -- the Settings > "Automatic scan and optimization" box remained unchecked and System Repair remained checked. (This is where you and I differ -- I still have to think about whether I want to leave System Repair on or not -- and the same goes for the 7569).
Inspiron 7569 (where I manually downloaded and installed DSA): The manual installation was at 9:16 PM. I show two manual D & D scans, which I distinctly remember initiating myself. SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools 93.0 MB 04/01/2021 version 5.4.1.14954 was one item listed in this first D&D scan. However, it had already been installed nearly a month ago. When I tried to re-install it, I got a screen that told me to RESTART and try again. After the RESTART, I did a second D&D scan and learned that the SupportAssist Recovery Tools was no longer listed, The other item was still there, which I just left alone. I think I said this previously: I had to re-uncheck the "Automatic scan and optimization box" -- probably because it was a manual installation, but since I had already had System Repair turned on, there was no re-set required there.

Glad I found this post.
After several month with a error message during startup it was finally fixed, as described here: https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware/17-R4-reseat-the-memory-message/td-p/7753621
But since the update to SA v3.9 Reliability monitor reports that Windows Installer reconfigures all programs on startup with the same message: "Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: xxxx"
After some googling I have found that other have concurred this problem with both HP support Assist and Dell Support Assist. https://www.windows10forums.com/threads/windows-installer-reconfigures-programs-on-startup.5723/ and https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/what-is-successful-application-reconfiguration/
I have tested and the reconfiguration after startup/cold boot do not happen if SA is uninstalled. I uninstalled SA testet. I then re-installed SA and rebooted and as soon as the services "Dell Hardware Support" and Dell SupportAssist" starts the Reconfiguration in ratability monitor is listed. So definitely a SA problem. I can add that I dont have the " Dell SupportAssist Remediation" in my services so its not installed on my system and therefore not the option system Repair inside SA
I dont have any problems with the pc or the system itself, so if I hadn't check the ratability monitor i would not know. So I think I just live it for now and see if a future Windows update solves it or SA update. There is a miss between the new SA and windows 10.
It dosent happen to my dell xps with the same SA v.3.9 and same windows build. But it affects my Alienware 17 R3 just after the SA update.
Any tips or recommendation is much appreciated.

I had the ‘Successful Application Reconfigured” problem even with the old version of SA (3.8.1.23). I uninstalled SupportAssist and the “reconfigurations” in the Reliability Monitor (and in the Events Viewer) did NOT go away. I still had them with the new version of SA (3.9.0.234). However, I DO have Dell Support Remediation (which gets installed or updated when SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools is installed or updated). Now that I’ve disabled the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service, the “reconfigurations” have gone away.
So, given what you’ve described, this appears to be the logic:
1. If SupportAssist is installed, but SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools has NOT been installed (and therefore, there is NO Dell SupportAssist Remediation ), uninstalling SupportAssist will get rid of the “reconfigurations”.
2. If SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools has been installed (and therefore there IS Dell SupportAssist Remediation), then disabling Dell SupportAssist Remediation services will get rid of the “reconfigurations”.

@DELLKaren That makes sense.
I see in my list of programs that I have the Dell/Alienware SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update installed with version 5.4.1.14954. But I still does not have the "Dell SupportAssist Remediation" in my services or under program and features. Dell support assist and Dell/Alienware SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update was updated at the same time on 05.05.2021
I just uninstalled Support assist and not the Dell/Alienware SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update. When I re-installed the Support Assist the the reconfigurations was back. So i might try to uninstall BOTH SupportAssist and Dell/Alienware SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update. Preform a restart and then install SA and SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin in that order as described here: https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/SA-uninstall-reinstall/m-p/6056368#M84385
Do I miss something here? What do you recommend me to do if I want to get get rid of the “reconfigurations”

@ThomasAAT:
As far as I can figure out, Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update gets installed or updated when a new version of SupportAssist is installed or updated. For example, SupportAssist upgraded to 3.9.0.234 on May 5 and at the same time, it updated Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update. But, I also recall having installed a new version of the Plugin during the time SupportAssist continued in its current version.
Also, as far as I can figure out, Dell SupportAssist Remediation is a different animal. It appears when you install or update SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools. For example, on April 11, I downloaded SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools via Dell Update (but SupportAssist also notifies me if it needs to be installed--sometimes I install it with SupportAssist and sometimes I install it with Dell Update). Dell SupportAssist Remediation was updated at the same time as Tools updated and it has an April 11 date, too. Tools comes out in a new version about once a month.
Right now, I have disabled Dell SupportAssist Remediation services to get the "reconfigurations" to stop. If SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools is not offered to you via SupportAssist or Dell Update. I don't know how you can get it (because that's what will get you Dell SupportAssist Remediation, too), I get Tools from SupportAssist or Dell Update. That's how I got it the very first time, too. And, when Tools updates, Remediation also updates.
But, I will tell you that both @Imacri and I have reported this "reconfiguration" problem to Dell. They have said they will look into it.

@DELLKaren Thanks for that info. I dont get offered SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools via SupportAssist or Dell Update. I only have the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update that installed besides the SA update. So you don't think uninstalling and reinstalling SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update will make any differense? If not I don't bother try this and just let supportassist installed and wait for a fix from dell or in a windows update.
All this said. I also have a older dell xps l501x with the same SA and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin. I dont get the reconfiguration on this system.
So do you recommend me to let SA installed and wait for a possible fix? I dont experience any problems and my system is preforming as normal. Thanks.

Hi DELLKaren:
I saw something similar happen with the DSA OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update on 05-May-2021 when my Dell SupportAssist (DSA) was updated to v3.9.0.234 and it reinstalled the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14954 (see section C below).
A. April 13, 2021 (SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools Updated to v5.4.1.14594)
DSA v3.8.1 updated my SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools from v5.3.1.13866 to v5.4.1.14594 on 13-Apr-2021. Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features showed only DSA Remediation was updated. The image below shows:
B. April 24, 2021 (DSA OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update Updated to v5.4.1.14594)
DSA v3.8.1 updated my DSA OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update from v5.2.1.12926 to v5.4.1.14594 on 24-Apr-2021 as a separate update (i.e, an update for the full SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools was not detected) :
C. May 5, 2021 (DSA Updated to v3.9.0, SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 Reinstalled)
On 05-May-2021 DSA auto-updated from v3.8.1.23 to v3.9.0.234 at launch and then tried (and failed) several times to re-install the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14954 previously installed on 13-Apr-2021. When the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools reinstall finally ran to completion the install date of DSA Remediation v5.4.1.14954 remained unchanged at 13-Apr-2021. but the install date of the DSA OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14594 changed from 24-Apr-2021 to 05-May-2021.
________________________________________
Just FYI, I launched DSA 3.9.0 today (with the DSA Remediation service still DISABLED) and it immediately started another update check, even though my automatic scans are disabled (Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers at: | DISABLED). This time it found one update named "Dell Security Advisory - DSA-2021-088" to patch the DBUtil driver vulnerability I mentioned <here> on 05-May-2021. I'm hoping these unexpected update checks will stop now that this emergency update has been delivered, but it's possible just having the DSA Remediation service disabled is enough to trigger these unwanted update checks.

I've asked Dell-Cares, who is supposed to be looking into this problem, to look at your posts, too. Maybe, there will be a solution down the road. Who knows?

@DELLKaren I just tried to uninstall SA and Dell/Alienware SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update. And then installed just SA. I did not got the "Reconfigurations" after several reboots. But as soon as the Dell/Alienware SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update installed automatically the "Reconfigurations" was back. Is there a way to disable or stop the SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin from install?

I don't know. Maybe, @lmacri will reply with an answer.
