Question about Symm Optimizer

I hope somebody can help me with this:

I need to  set up Optimizer in a DMX4 frame to optimize the following volumes :

0A10 0A18 0A20 0A28 0A30 0A38 0A40 0A48
                          0A50 0A58 0A60 0A68 0A70 0A78 0A80 0A88
                          0A90 0A98 0AA0 0AA8 0AB0 0AB8 0AC0 0AC8
                          0AD0 0AD8 0AE0 0AE8 0AF0 0AF8 0B00 0B08
                          0B10 0B18 0B20 0B28 0B30 0B38 0B40 0B48
                          0B50 0B58 0B60 0B68 0B70 0B78 0B80 0B88
                          0B90 0B98 0BA0 0BA8 0BB0 0BB8 0BC0 0BC8
                          0BD0 0BD8 0BE0 0BE8 0BF0 0BF8 0C00 0C08
                          0C10 0C18 0C20 0C28 0C30 0C38 0C40 0C48
                          0C50 0C58 0C60 0C68 0C70 0C74 0C78 0C7C
                          0C80 0C84 0C88 0C8C 0C90 0C94 0C98 0C9C

                          0CA0 0CA4 0CA8 0CAC 0CB0 0CB4 0CB8 0CBC
                          0CC0 0CC4 0CC8 0CCC 0CD0 0CD4 0CD8 0CDC
                          0CE0 0CE4 0CE8 0CEC 0CF0 0CF4 0CF8 0CFC
                          0D00 0D04 0D08 0D0C 0D10 0D14 0D18 0D1C
                          0D20 0D24 0D28 0D2C 0D30 0D34 0D38 0D3C
                          0D40 0D44 0D48 0D4C 0D50 0D54 0D58 0D5C
                          0D60 0D64 0D68 0D6C 0D70
I have the following questions:

1) Do I need to declare of those volumes in the manual swap list using the symconfig with the file

set swap_list {Hyper1} with {Hyper2} [, {Hyper3} with {Hyper4},... ] or Optimizer will work on all the volumes by default?

2)In case that I have to specify all the volumes in the manual swap list Do I need to specify all the volumes inside the Metavolumes?? For example 0A10 is a meta formed by :

Sym    Cap    Std Inv BCV Inv Pair          R1 Inv R2 Inv Pair
Dev    (MB)   Tracks  Tracks  State         Tracks Tracks State
----------------------------------------------------------------
0A10  61425        -       -  N/A                -      - N/A
0A11  61425        -       -  N/A                -      - N/A
0A12  61425        -       -  N/A                -      - N/A
0A13  61425        -       -  N/A                -      - N/A
0A14  61425        -       -  N/A                -      - N/A
0A15  61425        -       -  N/A                -      - N/A
0A16  61425        -       -  N/A                -      - N/A
0A17  61425        -       -  N/A                -      - N/A
----------------------------------------------------------------
      491400        -       -                     -      -
}

Do I need to specify A10, A11, A12 ...etc  in the swap list or only the header ?

Thank you,

Alberto, The following is from the Optimizer and FAST technical notes.

Within both the SYMCLI and SMC it is possible to specify an individual metadevice member to be migrated to a new set of disks. However, migrations of metadevice members can only take place within the physical diskgroup the device is currently configured. This is due to the configuration requirement that all metadevice members be configured within the same physical diskgroup. While individual members can be migrated, it is not possible to specify just the head of the metadevice to be migrated. As previously discussed, specifying the metadevice head as the source of a migration will cause all members of the metadevice to be migrated.

So specifying just the Meta head will swap the entire Meta volume.

However, in my opinion trying to do a "manual" Optimizer swap of 864 volumes ( meta head and all members) will most likely only move the problem instead of correcting it.  I would suggest using Optimizer in the "auto" or "user approved" mode and let it decide just which volumes really need to be moved.  I doubt it will find that all 864 volumes need to be moved.

Its been a while since i have touched Optimizer but to answer your questions

1) I believe Optimizer runs on all devices in the symmetrix except those are not qualified by optimizer. If you have to manually create a swap list then whats the use of optimizer but yes you can add a list of devices which you want to avoid from optimizer to run through them.

2) Since you dont need to add any devices manually so question of adding meta head or all meta members becomes invalid.

But like I said its been a while since i have worked on Optimizer, I would recommend that you check the Optimizer guide for more details or wait for an optimizer guru to answer your questions
