Symmetrix Performance Analyzer (SPA) v2.1 Licensing
I recently downloaded the updated (12/15/2010) SE/SMC7.2/SPA2.1 virtual appliance from PowerLink but cannot figure out how to license SPA.
I see in SMC where I can apply an SPA license, but it’s looking for a local path on the SMC server, which in this case is the virtual appliance, which I cannot copy files to. Is there yet another new licensing scheme for SPA 2.1??
How does one license SPA when running with the SMC7.2/SPA2.1 vApp from EMC? Do I need a different/new license?
see in SMC where I can apply an SPA license, but it’s looking for a local path on the SMC server, which in this case is the virtual appliance, which I cannot copy files to.

Rich

I dont think SPA vAPP supports ELM as of now but I need to check it in the lab.

That's what I'm hearing... according to EMC document 300-011-734:
===============================================
SPA 2.1 uses host-based eLicensing to enter and query its licenses.
Starting with 2.1, there is only a single SPA license.
Note:
SPA 2.0 utilizes host-based Electronic License Management, therefore
you will be provided with a License Authorization Code letter for your SPA
software. Use this license code to register the SPA software electronically on
the EMC Powerlink
® website

Mine is not working...
It does not accept smc/smc when I launch SMC through vapp. I have already tried deleting and redeploying the OVF.

The default username/password for SMC is smc/smc. The default username/password for the vAPP configuration interface is seconfig/seconfig.

What about when you launch the SMC directly from within a new browser window? Try "https:// :8443/sem".

I have tried the same on another ESX Server but the same problem. I will go home and download the zip file again and try the same stuff over the weekend. When did you download this ZIP file from powerlink?

Saurav

I downloaded the zip file for the vapp on 12/29 this past week. It was dated 12/15 on PowerLink.
Once it was loaded and setup in vmware, we just logged into the configuration interface with seconfig/seconfig, then launched SMC and logged in with smc/smc (and entered the SMC license key on the login screen).

Maybe you need to add the "smc" user to the User Authorization database on the Symmetrix system with the SecurityAdmin role... ?

I have tried all possible solutions. Have you got your vApp working for SPA? I still believe that SPA with vAPP is still not supported but you can confirm it with support.
Thanks,
Saurabh

No, SPA is not working on our vApp since we cannot seem to license the software. I think it would be silly for EMC to have bundled SE, SMC and SPA into a single virtual appliance and not allow you to run one of those components (SPA), so I'm hoping I hear something positive back from EMC support.

So it turns out there was a mistake on EMC's part by advertising that SPA was included with SE and SMC in the latest (12/15/2010) release of the Symmetrix management software vApp. It's actually not in there, which explains the lack of capability to license SPA from the vApp management GUI.

Wow! Stumbled across this while drying to dig up info on Vapp.
If you haven't given up yet, the new version out there does indeed have SPA bundled in. Laughing........ though, it was impossible to try and license, because the path to the symlmf command was not set in the appliance. I believe they have posted the fix for this, I just got it a few months back. If you find it still doesn't work on PowerLink, let me know I will send you my copy.
Now crying......
The licensing is changing yet again......... though things are brighter because the locking ID restriction is being changed so that the licenses are not locked to MAC address or host. You will will be able to move your licenses to different hosts instead of having to go through the trouble of the licensing portal or the licensing group.
Also note:
Please note that we can ONLY give you a SPA 2.2 (host id=any) license key on a VMAX at Enginuity code level 5785.198.148 and SE 7.3. This is due to the fact that as of right now it only comes as a bundle and that bundle also contains SMC. If I give you this bundle for a VMAX not at that code level and not at SE version 7.3, the customer will receive errors about SMC. Same holds true for DMX’s as well.
We will not have a stand-alone SPA 2.2 license key to support DMX and VMAX below Eng code level 5875.198.148 until the end of October.
