Monitoring dell PE Rxxx series with snmp, vmware

Hi guys.

We have some dell poweredge R410 and R710 running vmware 5.0/5.1.

We would like to monitor them using our snmp NMS. monitor things like raid, fans, cpu, memory slot/status, powersupplies..

I installed the omsa  and I can access it using the open manage server administrator web interface, so the app should be well installed.. but again I would like to be able to monitor the server with our NMS. snmp is running on the server as well because I can do a snmpwalk.

But when I try to get the system health information using snmpwalk and the dell mib /oid I get the follow error:

snmpwalk -v2c -c xxxx A.B.C.D .1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.1.300
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.674.10892.1.300 = No Such Object available on this agent at this OID

looks like I cant get the anything from the enterprise .674...

How can I achieve this?

Regards

Techux,

You can configure SNMP with the Open Manage IT Assistant. YOu install it on a windows based machine and can monitor the server and configure snmp from that workstation.

Here is the link you need - www.dell.com/.../poweredge-2950

Let me know how it goes.

Server Administrator Instrumentation MIB ( filename 10892.mib ) provides instrumentation data that allows you to monitor the health of a system with SNMP management applications.

It provides Information about the status of temperatures, power supplies, voltages, currents, fans, and memory at key points in the system.

Whatever OID you are trying to do snmpwalk defines chassis types, events, and indications

Try the valid syntax  to do snmpwalk

snmpwalk -v 1 -m ALL -c public localhost 1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.1.300

refer the SNMP Output:

1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.1.300.10.1.1.1 = 1

Hi Techux,

Also can you confirm us what VMware ESX (ESXi /ESX classic) version is being used?

If you are using ESX classic, then please take a look on the below document

I would suggest to you to use Dell OpenManage Essential(OME) 1.1 system Management console that provides Dell hardware management.

You can download the OME:

  http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/1989.openmanage-essentials.aspx

Also you can check below link on "How to configure SNMP on VMware ESX Classic with OpenManage Essentials (OME)"

   http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/m/white_papers/20229206.aspx

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks

I am using esxi 5.1

I already have Open manage adminsitrator, I can login using my browser and then monitor all the chassis. We have some otthers HP servers as well, but the idea is to monitor all the servers using X NMS Network Node Managment and not using a monitor application for each serve brand. That is why I need snmp.

I cant get any information with that OID .674. I get this error:

SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.674.10892.1.300 = No Such Object available on this agent at this OID

Esxi is running SNMP but It doesnt have the mibs to monitor it with snmp, but only with the OM server admin..

How can I load the mibs in the OS esxi?

thanks

Hi,

The  Server Administrator does not support SNMP Get and Set operations on VMWare ESXi 4.X and ESXi 5.x as the required SNMP support is unavailable. However the Server Administrator supports SNMP traps on VMware ESXi 4.X and ESXi 5.X.

Please refer the sections "Availability On Supported Operating Systems" and "Configuring The SNMP Agent On Systems Running Supported VMware ESXi 4.X And ESXi 5.X Operating Systems" of OpenManage Server Administrator User Guide available

Hope this answers your query.

Thanks,

Hello,

I'm trying to implement a temperature monitoring in ESXi environment and I'm the same difficulty.

In windows server I can do smpget consulting and project reports, but for VMware environment can not.

Is there an alternative solution?

Thanks.
