Dell Venue 7 issue with videos

Haven't been able to watch any videos/movies on my Dell Venue 7 from my micro sd card. I've tried different formats (MP4, etc) along with different video players and none of the movies will play. Anyone know if this is due to the video/audio codecs not being correct? If this is due to the codecs anyone know which specific ones to use when converting a video format? Thanks
