Streak 7 Dilemma - PLS Help!

I live in Lebanon, the Middle East. I purchased a Dell Streak 7 US4G from a store here that sells refurbished US products.  I am generally happy with the purchase and, in fact, truly say it is one of the best Dell products I have ever owned and one of the finest tablets in the world today. My only despair is that it has a carrier lock to it which in my case is T-Mobile, so I am only limited to using just the WiFi part of it and that takes most of the fun away out of it, as I would really like to be able to carry my S7 on me all the time, be able to use it away from home, at work and in places where there aren't WiFi hotspots.

The problem is this. In this part of the world where I live in, T-Mobile does not operate, nor have any office or representatives whom I can get in contact with. Even if I wanted to abide with being a customer or sign a contract with them should that be the only way to use my S7 in GSM mode, I technologically can't as they don't operate in this area, so I don't even see any reason why I should remain locked to a carrier that I cannot even use to begin with.

I have emailed Dell several times and they keep telling me that it is a retail product and must contact T-Mobile. So I am stuck, confused, and not totally sure what to do. T-Mobile is NOT contactable in my case because I am NOT a US-based customer; I don't even know what is their International hotline, if there is even one.

So really, neither Dell nor T-Mobile is gaining any benefit in not providing me with an unlock code so that I could enjoy my S7 to its fullest.

I sincerely would appreciate your help in this. I have emailed several times all information required (eg: IMEI number, etc.)

Truly yours.

Dell customer in Lebanon.

Hi Alibam,

Unfortunately, the store which sold you the device should have advised you that it was locked to T-Mobile. Have you already reached out to UnlockCodeRequest@dell.com? What was their response?

Thanks,

Amy

Dear Amy,

Yes, I emailed UnlockCodeRequest@dell.com  In fact, they were my first point of contact and I will post you their reply below. It's like I keep running against brick-walls! :-(  They refer me to T-Mobile, I can NOT get in touch with T-mobile, so I call Dell tech support, who then starts the cycle again about how it is a "Retail" product, and that for them to provide me with an unlock code, I must provide proof of purchase, and I just cannot explain it any more simpler than I don't know that information, since, like I keep pointing out over and over that it is a product I purchased from a store that sells refurbished US products - I mean, it's like one of those tech stores that sells hardware from all over the world, stuff that are no longer continued by the manufacturers (as in the case of the Streak 7. Dell no longer manufactures it!). So really, I just don't get it which part of "refurbished" both parties don't get. Then finally they refer me to contact mobilitysupport@dell.com, which I did and to which I got no reply. (as you will see below)

And what stomps me more is the fact that both Dell and T-mobile fail to see that I live in an area of the world where it's at least 6,000 miles from the USA and being locked to a carrier THERE makes no sense since a) even if I were willing to USE that service here, it's impossible from a technological perspective and b) it's not costing them or T-mobile anything at all to release it to a customer. a practice which in itself is totally legal and hurts no one . I just don't know why Dell is being so mean or failing to "grasp" the situation and keeps treating my case as a run-of-the-mill typical US customer who wants to switch to AT & T, for example.

Anyway, I appreciate your kindness in taking the time to respond. Here is the response I got below:

Hello,

I would like to request an unlock code for my Dell Streak 7 T-Mobile, please.  I am from Lebanon, Middle East and have always been a Dell fan. I purchased this tablet from a store that sells refurbished US products. It kept asking me to insert "special unlock code" whenever I insert a SIM, which I couldn't understand and after intensive searching on the Internet, I found out that this is a carrier lock and I must email you as you can send me the code.

Respectfully yours,

Dear Dell,

I am living in LEBANON, MIDDLE-EAST. T-Mobile has no representatives here, and when I tried to chat with online support by clicking the links which you provided me, they would only respond to US based customers.

As you can see, I had no use for my Streak 7 to be locked to a carrier which does not even operate here. I bought my product from a store here that sells refurbished US products. I am only able to use the WIFI of my Dell Steak 7. I sincerely wish you can provide me with the unlock code as I would like to use our local GSM carrier here and be able to use the Internet while away from home or wifi hotspots.

I truly love this product and have always been a Dell fan. It's very sad that I cannot enjoy this retail product due to a carrier lock restriction which does not even apply to the country I live in and makes no sense for it to be unusable.

I sincerely hope and wish you can provide me with this.

Truly yours,

Thank you Alibam. I will email you a proof of purchase. Please try contacting T-mobile via chat and give them this document and request your unlock code. Please let me know what the outcome is.

Really, in my opinion, the re-seller should have done this for you, but it is possible they were not aware of the process.

Thanks,

Amy

First for all, thank you and I mean this sincerely, Amy. Thank you for taking the time and trying to help me, even when it didn't work out. It's staff like you that still make it worthwhile to think that yes there are truly some who care about the end user and it's not just all business.

I got your email and so I tried to log on to T-Mobile as you pointed. I couldn't do an "online chat" like you said to contact them via chat because it states "Live Chat service is available for T-Mobile USA customers only."

I couldn't even find anywhere on the web an email address for T-mobile support to forward them what you sent me, unless I am Googling the wrong stuff.

So I had a friend of mine who lives in the US call Dell, who was very helpful. The agent took all the info and tried to link her with T-mobile, doing what she said was a '3 way conference' but for someone reason the Dell agent couldn't get T-mobile so gave my friend a case number and asked her to call 877 453 1304. He was kind, patient and above all understanding. He just explained that the code has to come from T-mobile.

T-mobile just don't want to listen! :( They wouldn't EVEN let her get to the part of explaining that it is a RETAIL product! No. I mean even though everything you provided me stands legit, the agent just insists that the ORIGINAL owner must call and submit a request for an unlock code. My friend explained that it was refurbished, but all the agent would say is "Sorry, Ma'am. Until the original owner submits a request, I can't help you".

I just don't get it. I really don't! What good is it to them to have a piece of hardware locked to a carrier that is not EVEN operable in the region I live in stomps me. But I guess some things I just don't understand.

Anyway, as sad as it is, I think I will just keep my tablet using just the WiFi. Cause I truly do like it. In my opinion, it's just sad Dell has discontinued a product which I believe has very good potentials and just needs a little teeny bits of enhancements to be amongst the top 5 tablets in the world. Even as it is, I am totally in love with it - does all I need. Just wish I would have been able to use it everywhere I go, and not just at home or around wifi hotspots.

Once again, I truly appreciate all your help and kindness. Bless you.

Hi did you try the link i posted to check if they offer streak7 unlocking?? i know youll have to pay but here in uk often when we purchase 3g mobiles there often much cheaper when locked to the carrier network and purchasing one of those as apposed to more expensive simfree can be quite a difference ,but if you want to use another carriers simcard  like yourself you also must first unlock it,, and here in uk the networks dont like you doing this but still have to allow it ,different networks have different rules ,some will give you the Unlockcode for free after youve been locked to there network for 12 months if you request ,some require wait 3 monts then pay a £20 / £25 pounds fee ,,and some are more difficult..of course waiting that time restricts your choice of network to use to the original one ..ive found it much more convient to skip that waiting time and purchase the Unlockcode via one of the online services,,indeed many of the companys contact the network in question or manufacturer via some rapid method and quickly send the Unlockcode...Goodluck in getting your streak7 unlocked from t-mobile im sure youll get sorted in near future and be able to use your devices 3g connectivity in your country.
