Surely would make more sense to upgrade or install an additional internal disk drive?

Thanks Conor! Can I use USB physical hard drive for virtualization? Any compatibility limitation for USB drives?

Not for running VM’s from USB, it seems you can mount a USB drive and use for backups and transportation of VM’s, see the below thread...
