Solutions To Several Common VNX Faults
Solutions To Several Common VNX Faults
In this article, we will talk about several common VNX faults and their solutions.
Detailed Information
Question 1: Unable to access Unisphere after upgrading to Java version 7 or 8
Solution:
Under Java Release Version 7 Update 51 the Security, by default, is set to High. As a result Java applications identified by a certificate from a trusted authority will be allowed to run, whereas all will be blocked.
There are two options to resolve this issue. Before proceeding with the 2 workarounds please verify that the current version of Java is the only version running. If there are older versions please remove them before proceeding.
Option 1: Set Java Security to "Medium"
1. Open the Control Panel
2. Select "Programs"
3. Select "Java (32-bit)"
4. Select "Security" tab
5. Set "Security Level" to "Medium"
6. Select "Apply" and then "Okay"
Option 2: Add Unisphere to filter (This will need to be done for each Unisphere Device [i.e. SP Address + CS Address])
1. Open the Control Panel
2. Select "Programs"
3. Select "Java (32-bit)
4. Select "Security" tab
5. Select "Edit Site List..."
6. Add URL of Unisphere
7. Select Okay
8. Select "Apply" and then "Okay"
Question 2: Unable to use vSphere VSI Unified Storage Manager to manage VNX block storage
Solution:
After installing VSI Unified Storage Management and configuring VNX block access, the customer receives a status "Could not find valid software header for entry line. Unable to validate the identity of the server. There are issues with the certificate presented"
The reason is when running commands directly in a command prompt,NaviCLI has the ability to prompt for a security certificate. VSI does not have the ability to prompt for a certificate causing it to fail this step.
To solve this, NaviCLI needs to be re-installed with specific options selected.
1. Go to Start > All Programs > EMC > NavisphereCLI > Uninstall Navisphere CLI
2. Select "Repair / Reinstall"
3. Under "Set Verification Level", select Low
4. Under "Create Security File", select Do not create security credentials file
5. Select Next then Install
Question 3: Why sometimes “Copy to Hot Spare” request would fail?
Solution:
The general rule for a proactive spare is that a copy to hot sparing can only take place on a redundant RAID group. There can be only one active copy-to-hot spare operation per RAID group. Multiple copy-to-hot spare operations can be taking place as long as they are on different RAID groups. At least one hot spare must be left to be used for hot sparing only. The exception is if only one hot spare is bound in the storage system. Then it can be used as a proactive hot spare.
Question 4: An error message shows up when configuring dial-home template on VNX
Solution:
The error message is "Logging event to system log by agent on SP is not supported." Then the user is unable to assign template.
To solve this, right-click the template. Uncheck the "Log to System log" option.
Question 5: Which methods can change the IP address of VNX SP
Solution:
Refer to the following table
Device Type |
Login Type |
Parameters |
Notes |
VNX Unified |
Setup Page |
IP address, subnet mask, gateway |
Grayed out |
VNX Unified |
Proxy ARP |
IP address, subnet mask, gateway |
No reboot |
VNX Block | CLARiiON |
Setup Page |
IP address, subnet mask, gateway, Network name |
SP reboot |
VNX Block | CLARiiON |
NaviCLI |
IP address, subnet mask, gateway |
No reboot |
VNX block | CLARiiON |
NaviCLI |
Network name |
SP reboot |
Question 6: When using Unisphere Central to provision storage, the wizard will divide the storage size which is greater than 20G into two parts
Solution:
This will happen when using Metrics Configuration:
From Unisphere online help document, we can know that this is expected behavior and working as designed. Unisphere Central allocates approximately 10 GB of storage immediately and the remainder of the storage in a background process.
Question 7: After storage pool expansion, the operation is always in “Rebalancing” status
Solution:
This is expected behavior and working as designed.
The ”Operation” lists the type of operation in progress or the last operation completed, and the percent complete of that operation. If the pool was expanded and a rebalance operation is being performed, this value displays as Rebalancing. If another pool operation starts during the rebalance operation, the other pool operation is shown instead.

Hi Dynamox,
According to KB “How to change IP address, subnet mask , default gateway of a CLARiiON or VNX for Block storage processor (SP) without rebooting the SPs” https://support.emc.com/kb/183713 , “
naviseccli commands will not cause SPs to reboot. Using the CLARiiON/Block setup page in GUI causes a reboot. Any name change requires SP reboot.”
You can also refer to the steps in KB “How to rename a VNX Array”, https://support.emc.com/kb/191337
