Use Gen 1 shelves on Gen 2 VNXe

Hi there,

Quick question, does anyone know if you can use VNXe3100/3150/3300 on a VNXe3200?

Thanks,

Ed

We don't recommended; however, you may use it provided if the rack/shelves are same size....

Hi Suman,

Could you elaborate on what you mean by 'rack/shelves are the same size...'?

When the 3200 was announced, I asked this question (as we have a 3100 with two DAE shelves and would like to keep using these if possible). I was told they are not compatible, but would be interested in clarification.

Would adding existing DAEs (and replacing the base DPE with a 3200) work, and would it be supported by EMC? I'm not looking to migrate the existing data and would be happy to wipe the disk shelves. I'm interested in whether the DAEs are physically compatible and supported.

Hello All,

I am currently investigating this, however, just based on knowledge on the VNXe1 and 2 Series arrays. I do not think this is going to be supported. The differences between the VNXe1 Series to the VNXe2 Series are huge.

I will touch base when I find the definitive answer.

Thanks for following this up. I'd be interested in what's different between the DAE shelves between the two generations. Surely a DAE is just a SAS connection with a bunch of disks?

You would have thought so but as with everything EMC you can't it on face value.

Hello All,

I have asked engineering on this topic and as of right now VNXe1 Series DAE will not be compatible with the VNXe2 Series DPEs.

Does any one know if there is a way to migrate data from VNXe1 to VNXe2?

Physical or virtual hosts?

there always is a way

methods depend on SAN or NAS data, physical or virtual Hosts, NFS or CIFS or ISCSI, ....

I would suggest to start with the Unity migration technologies white paper which should mostly apply (expect for Unity file Import and SAN copy)
