ViPR is deployed as a virtual appliance. It can be deployed in a 3-VM or 5-VM configuration.
VMWare Requirements
ViPR deployment requires administrative rights to the VMware Virtual Center.
Before you deploy ViPR, you must have the following VMware software installed and
configured:
- VMware vCenter Server running in the vSphere environment.
- An installed VMware ESX or ESXi server 5.0.x, 5.1.x, or 5.5.x running in the vSphere
environment, and VMFS 5.
- An installed vSphere Client from which you can access your vCenter Server.
- A location accessible to the vSphere client with a minimum of 1.6 GB of free space to
store the files needed to deploy the ViPR virtual appliance. Additional disk space
should be reserved for the virtual appliance snapshots.
- DRS-enabled cluster or resource pool in a DRS-enabled cluster.
- Datastore on shared block storage. Solid State Drive (SSD) or 10K RPM Fibre Channel
for production environments. NL-SAS for non-production environments. Datastore
should be backed by a RAID 1+0 for production environments, or a RAID 6 for nonproduction
environments.
- Read/write latency for ESX and ESXi datastores should average 10ms or less.
Controller Virtual Machine Requirements: 3-VM or 5-VM configurations are supported
- 16 GB RAM per VM (dedicated)
- 4 vCPUs per VM
- Each vCPU = 1 physical core of Intel Xeon E5 or E7 families with 2.4 GHz or higher speed
- 600 GB disk space per VM
- Thick provisioned eager zeroed is recommended for production environments.
- Thin provisioned is acceptable for non-production environments.
- 1 Gbps network bandwidth available to each VM
Object data services Virtual Machine requirements: From 1 to 1000 VMs
- 32 GB RAM per VM
- 8 vCPUs per VM
- 150 GB of disk space per VM
- Thick provisioned eager zeroed is recommended for production environments.
- Thin provisioned is acceptable for non-production environments.
- 10 Gbps network bandwidth available to each VM
Network Latency
Between ViPR Controller VMs: Less than 1ms
Between ViPR Virtual Appliance and providers (such as SMI-S providers and FC switches): Less than 50ms
Between ViPR Controller and Object Data Service VMs: Less than 400ms
Prerequisites for ViPR UI
The UI runs on a variety of web browsers.
- Google Chrome
Version: 31, 32
OS: Windows
- Internet Explorer
Version: 9, 10, 11
OS: Windows (Compatibility mode must be off)
- Mozilla Firefox
Version: 25, 26
OS: Windows
Notes: - Enable cookies and pop-ups
- Disable all add-ons
- Enable JavaScript
Prerequisites for ViPR CLI
The ViPR CLI can run on supported Linux and Windows computers.
Although the ViPR CLI is available on a ViPR Controller VM, it is recommended that you install and run it on a different computer.
