AV-Test.org issues latest Certifications

Test details here:
http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2010/08_16a.xml

"For Q2/2010 we have tested 19 security products in the areas protection, repair and usability. 13 products have fulfilled our requirements and received an AV-Test certificate. The test reports can be found here:
http://www.av-test.org/certifications.php "

Comments:
Mainly commercial suites were tested on Win 7, although MSE is included. Notable failures include
- McAfee 2010
- Norman Security Suite 8.0
- Trend Micro: Internet Security Pro 2010

PDF reports are available on each product, and provide a lot of useful info on individual tests. I'm very impressed with them. Performance and dynamic tests are included.

Nice to see that Microsoft: Security Essentials  scored better than Avast and Avira's paid versions.

Limiting attention to just the 3 (or 4) popular "free programs" often recommended here (albeit their paid counterparts were the ones being tested),

I must admit being very surprised at how well AVG did... and (despite achieving certification) how poorly Avast did.

It has been a while since I looked at AVG's Free AV. The last time I did, I was less than impressed:

Casual readers here should note that I, and many other regulars here have used (and indeed promoted) AVG in the past. But not for some time now, for reasons outlined in the above link.

However, I too have noticed how well AVG fared in recent tests:
- Consistent VB100 certification by Virus Bulletin for the past 3 years (16 tests on various platforms)
- Virus Bulletins RAP tests: http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/rap-index.xml
- And now, this latest report from AV-Test, where AVG scores well.

I do note that AVG has not achieved "Advanced +" (highest certification) at AV-Comparatives for some time now, but it has generally received respectable "Advanced" ratings on most of their recent tests.

All I can conclude is that AVG is a reputable and popular AV. I still have reservations about it, and am not tempted to trial it again, given my past experiences. My next system will use MSE.

As always, YMMV.
