AVG free or Mcafee?

I just got a new vista laptop and i was wondering which anti-virus i should use when the 30-day norton subscription runs dry. So is AVG free or Mcafee anti-virus (i get free with comcast) better?

AVG Free, hands down. Used it for years, problem-free.

Just my opinion, but I won't have anything from McAfee on my system, and I wouldn't trust my security to anything my ISP offered, free or otherwise. (In my case, they offer  free Norton).

Congrats on the the laptop!

Just my 2-cents

McAfee and Norton are both resource hogs.
as other posters said here, most of the free ones are great, just follow the suggestions.

if you wish to compare, all the ones that are sold for a price, will let you test them for free for 30 days.  This way you can see for yourself how you like them before you pay for them.

I have been using Trend Micro PCCillin, and by far it bests McAfee and Norton.
Once I run out my subscription, I will try a few of the free ones for myself too.

Good Luck

Peace

I read your article about AVG and downloaded it just now when my McAfee expired.  I have a problem that occurred with this stupid balloon that popped up on the lower right corner of my task bar telling me I had this terrible virus and that ContraVirus 2.0 was automatically downloading to my computer and no matter what I do now, it keeps coming back and this stupid balloon comes up every two seconds.

Any suggestions?

Contravirus is a virus infection.  Scan with AVG to get rid of it.

What about Kaspersky? Any experience?

Sheri, Kaspersky is a highly rated Russian Firewall.AV.  Drawbacks are support and expense.

It was free when I purchased it a few months ago. Twenty five dollar rebate from Amazon and $25 from Kaspersky. Their forum support was excellent. It's the only source for anti virus ONLY. I have Windows Defender and Microsoft Firewall and Ad-Aware. I don't even want E-Mail monitoring. So why does anyone need the expensive internet security packages that all these security companies are trying to sell.

People get trial versions of security packages pre-installed on new computers and stay with them.
Please keep in mind that there is NO anti-virus that finds everything.

Mybride98, ContraVirus is not a virus. Your anti-virus application may identify it, but may not clean it well. ContraVirus is a rogue product:

If you are still having a problem with ContraVirus follow these instructions: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic95405.html

Or post on the HijackThis board and someone will help you clean it up.
