Hi James_S,

If that is the only problem, you should not have to do an R&R.

If you are using Spybot's TeaTimer, disable it before running any other scanners, including the one recommended below.

For XP to disable TeaTimer:
Go to Start>Run. Type Msconfig > OK. On the next window that opens > Startup tab UNcheck the entry for TeaTimer until this is over...
1. Open Spybot
2. Click Mode > Advanced Mode
3. Click Yes
4. Click Tools (located in the bottom left corner) > Resident
5. Uncheck 'Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active'
6. Then close Spybot.
Reboot.
Verify that TeaTimer is not running.
After ALL cleaning of your system has been completed and you have confirmed that your computer is clean, reverse these steps and re-enable the protection applets for TeaTimer.

Following that, try running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Please download to your desktop Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
  • manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan"; then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checkedPhotobucket
    Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. A reboot is recommended.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • If you are still having problems and/or would like a follow-up check to be sure the infection as well as vulnerabilities are gone, copy and paste the entire report into your next reply. Also include a fresh HijackThis log. Instructions for downloading HijackThis are in the "Please Read..." announcement at the top of the forum.

    Extra Notes:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

    * If you are unable to download or install MBAM on your computer, see if you can use a friend's or family member's computer to download MBAM. Use this update link here to manually download the update. Once downloaded, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "catchjunk.exe". Copy the installer file and the update file to your CD or flash drive. Transfer the file to the infected computer. Install the "catchjunk.exe" file, then run the update so that you will have the current definitions. After that, run a full system scan and select to have the program REMOVE whatever it finds.

-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.

**If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-clean.exe

Hi Bugbatter,

Tnx for the reply. I am indeed having other problems and don't know if it is caused by the situation in my initial post. I have long web page loadups, after I click on a favorite it takes about 5-8 sec before the site comes up,when I click on an application on my desktop whether it be anti virus, or web browser it takes abt 30 sec for the computer to respond. Also if I click on,say IE and after waiting for 10 sec I click on it again, eventually IE will open up in 2 windows. I did as you suggested anfd the teatimer was already off. I turned it off because everytime something tried to change my registry it would ask me if I wanted to allow or disallow the change. I was afraid that I might screw things up by not knowing which changes to allow or disallow. Here are the log files from MBAM and Highjack This

We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • Click Yes at the prompt for Optional Scan.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
  • 1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Copy/paste both logs to your reply on the forum.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
  • Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.

You mentioned MyWay.  My Way is installed by Dell and is not spyware.
Search Assistant does not collect personal information upon startup or at any time as a requirement of use, does not monitor the sites a user visits, does not monitor a user's behavior on the Internet, does not log or track keystrokes, does not service or facilitate ads, and is completely spyware-free and adware-free.

Here are the steps for removal if you choose to do so:

(1) Remove My Way Search Assistant
* Close all open Web browsers
* Click Start- Control Panel- Add or Remove Programs
* Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon
* Click Remove a program
* Click My Way Search Assistant
* Click the Change/Remove button
* Follow the prompts

(2)
* From the Add/Remove list, click MyWebSearch (If not listed, go to 3)
* Click the Change/Remove button
* Follow the prompts

(3)
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/MSICLEAN.htm
or here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
Install the program, then start it. Scroll down the list and click My Way Search Assistant entry, click the Remove button.

IF you removed My Way, please place a checkmark next to these if they still exist:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\M

icrosoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\M
icrosoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked".

Close HijackThis and reboot.

You have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.
Because Viewpoint's software will track your web surfing and tailor advertisements based on the web pages you are visiting, I suggest you remove the program.
** Note: Removing Viewpoint Media Player may cause the program that bundled it to not function as intended. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
If you wish to remove Viewpoint, end process on ViewManager in Task Manager.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
  • Viewpoint Experience Technology

Then remove the Viewpoint folder in your Program Files.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16 .
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • NOTE: As always during installations, beware of any pre-checked option to install a toolbar. If you do not want it, UNcheck it.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.
    Close Add/Remove.

  • * In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java =this folder. Delete any subfolders.
    * Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\ JavaVM =this folder, if found!
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Following all that, please let me know how things are running. If everything seems to be back to normal, we'll flush System Restore, and you'll be good to go.
