Compatibility update for upgrading Windows 7 (kb 2952664)
Compatibility update for upgrading Windows 7 (kb 2952664) appeared this morning as an IMPORTANT update for Win7 (x64) PRO.
The information about it is minimal: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2952664 : This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows.
So is this required only for Win7 users who intend to upgrade to Win8? Trying to figure this one out.

I received the notification for the update, but on my system (Win 7 Home Premium (x64)) it is OPTIONAL.

Interesting. Perhaps the difference is Home Premium vs. Pro.
on my PRO system, Windows Update initially listed it as IMPORTANT.
After installation, in the update history, it was then cited only as RECOMMENDED.

I too am seeing this as an optional (recommended) update on my Win 7x64 Home Premium system.
As a general rule, I never install optional updates without a compelling reason.

A manual check for updates on my Win 7 Pro showed this as an optional update also.
Maybe it's a glitch on the Automatic Update Notification service, which I do not use.

With no fanfare or warning -- and scarce details from Microsoft -- an 'important' update has appeared on fully patched Windows 7 machines
