Critical error pop-up window in internet explorer

My daughter has a Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP.  When she starts internet explorer a pop-up window appears saying a critical error has occurred.  It says "Some dangerous viruses has been found in her system.  Microsoft XP files corrupted.  This may lead to the destruction of important files in C:\Windows.  Download protection software now.  Click OK to download the antispyware. (recommended)."  When you click No a blank window in explorer comes up trying to get to free-viruscan.com/id/4912933/4/1/.  This causes the browser to stop responding and she can get no further.  This happens everytime she starts a new browser.  She does have Norton Internet Security which blocks the site, but does not take it off the computer.  She has also tried Spyware Doctor and this has not helped either.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Thanks!

download and install the FREE version of
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware [MBAM]
 .
check for updates
run a QUICK scan
and allow it to REMOVE/QUARANTINE any items it finds.
.
let us know the results.   this may only be the first step ---we can then offer some follow-up suggestions.

Note:  if the problem is so bad that you can't download MBAM on the infected machine, you should download it onto another good machine, the transfer it (via memory stick, or CD-R/W) to the infected machine.   install, check for updates, run a QUICK scan, and (hopefully) remove problems.

I was able to install the program from a cd and after the update was ran, it found goldman.dll in the system files.  Once this was removed, it is now working fine.  Thank you so much!
