I found this post of yours in the virus/spyware forum:

"I have found that Moviepass.tv has taken up residence in my computer.  Is there an easy way to get it to move out?  Any suggestions would be appreciated."

Is this (still) your problem?   if so, can you give us some more details, what you mean by "taken up residence"?   are you getting popups?   is some program actually running, showing this?  if so, i'll try to get someone else to analyze this log, as nothing "stands out" to me....

but in order for us to use HJT here:

You're running HJT from a TEMP directory:

C:\DOCUME~1\Fran\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

When you do so, either HJT will not create its log files and backup files; or if it does, you risk losing them when the TEMP's cache is cleared. It's important that you save these backup files, in case you have to "undo" [restore] some of the things you "FIX" incorrectly.

So you need to move HJT into a separate, non-temporary, non-Desktop, directory of its own. We recommend using the directory C:\HJT , so that it will then appear in your log, under running processes, as C:\HJT\HiJackThis.exe

Please reply to this thread, answer my questions, and post a new HJT log showing that you've moved HJT as i've instructed.

place your cursor on any EMPTY area on your desktop.   RIGHT-click, select NEW, select FOLDER.   this will create a new folder on your desktop, whose (initial/default) name is "New Folder".   RENAME it to something like "HiJackThis".

then try to "drag" the HJT program from its TEMPorary location, into this new folder.   If it "refuses" to be dragged, you can RIGHT-click on the program, COPY it, move your cursor into the new folder, and then PASTE the program there.

*****************************

if you have trouble with any of the above, here's another way to proceed:

Download a self-extracting copy of HijackThis from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe     and save it to your Desktop.
Double-click on the file hijackthis_sfx.exe file, and it will self-extract into its own folder, C:\Program Files\HijackThis

****************

P.S,  I'm trying to get someone else here to analyze this problem.

Yes.  I am getting the most annoying woman popping up every 20 minutes or so.  She claims that I have downloaded a trial version of moviepass.tv (which I haven't) and since I did not cancel the service - I must now pay for it.  You have to listen to her entire speech before you can even shut her off.  You either have to pay or click the radio button that asks to be reminded later.  She shows up in regular intervals.  I'm about ready to punch her/monitor screen out!

How exactly do I move HiJack this to the C drive?  Do I have to download the program again or can I copy/move it?  Sorry, I'm extremely computer challenged.

Okay.  I think I have the folder moved to my C Drive.  Instead of doing what you suggested, I used Windows Explorer and dragged it to the proper location.  Sound right to you??  I opened the file and the log is still there as well at the program.  Should I run the scan a second time?

should be okay.... there are many ways to accomplish the same goal.

yes, post a new log, it will show us where HiJackThis is running from....

Although I find the highjackthis folder in my C Drive, a message came up prior to running the scan telling me that it was in a temp file.  Please let me know if I've followed instructions correctly.  Thanks.

HJT is still running from a TEMP directory:

C:\DOCUME~1\Fran\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 3 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

in your first log, it was in Temporary Directory 1 (rather than 3)

try the alternative procedure i suggested above:

Download a self-extracting copy of the latest version of HJT (HiJackThis) (version 1.99.1) from
Save it to your Desktop.
Double-click on the file    hijackthis_sfx.exe    file, and allow it to self-extract [by clicking on UnZip] into the suggested/default folder,
C:\Program Files\HijackThis

Use Windows Explorer to navigate your way into this folder, and then double click on HiJackThis. exe

Click on  Do a System Scan and Save a LogFile

This will automatically open NotePad

Copy the entire file from NotePad:  EDIT/SelectAll, EDIT/Copy

Then REPLY to this thread, and  PASTE the results here.

just an update... i've been doing some research on your problem... and i believe i've located at least one of the "offending" lines in your HJT log.   but we need to move HJT to a good location, before we try anything.

As a reminder, I've contacted someone else, and will get the information over to him as well.

Questions for you:

1)  It seems that mediapass makes its "ransom" after a 3-day "trial" period.   Do you know [or does the advertisement actually tell you] the date that it was "installed" on your system?

2) Since you say you didn't download it, can we take that to mean you never give them any credit-card nor bank information?   If they don't have any information on you, all we need to do is stop the popups, and your problem will be over.   [But  if you did give them the information, and we simply "stop" the program from running, they can continue to bill you.]

I've just received your last two posts.  I will probably wait until morning to tackle this so I don't make any mistakes.  What I'd like to know before I begin is - should I delete/uninstall the program I already have on the computer before downloading it a second time?

The pop-up does give a date.  I think it is 2-01-06 but will double check it the next time I have to endure watching it again.  The woman on this pop-up gives you the "gotta ya" face.  Trust me, you'd want to club her too.

I didn't give any bank information and don't intend to.  This company ought to be prosecuted for holding people hostage like this.  I'm sure there are some people out there who would give up the money just to get rid of the annoyance.  It isn't cheap either, $89.00 for the year.  Thanks for your patience.

if you can't "endure" it, the reason why i was asking for the date it was installed is that one option (which I am   *NOT*  recommending at this point) is to use System Restore to restore your PC to a date before this program was installed.   Since it would seem to be about 2 1/2 months ago, I don't know that you'd really want to attempt going back that far [unless everything else fails... but i have reason to believe we know how to fix it].

it would be best to keep only one copy of HJT around... so that you don't "accidentally" run one of the bad ones at some future date.   once you download/install it to a good location, you should keep it there "permanently", in case you ever need to use it again at some future time.... and so that it will keep a "history" of your changes, so we can "undo" anything if we ever have to.

by the way, do you happen to have/use Ad-Aware and/or Spybot ??  If so, have you tried running them to see if they'd remove this problem?

This is Ron.  I usually take over when KY331 gets as far as he feels confident to go.

I believe these are the cause of your problems:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaPipe P2P Loader] "C:\Program Files\p2pnetworks\mpp2pl.exe" /H
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Notification Utility] "C:\Program Files\Notify\notify.exe " /silent

Get the killbox from:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

extract it to your desktop and run it.

Under Options check the Remove Directories option

Where it says Full Path of File to Delete put in:

C:\Program Files\p2pnetworks

check Delete on Reboot then press the red button.
It will want to reboot.  Tell it NO.

Repeat for

C:\Program Files\Notify

Let it reboot

Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.  Log in with your usual login.

Run HijackThis (scan only) and check the following then Fix Checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaPipe P2P Loader] "C:\Program Files\p2pnetworks\mpp2pl.exe" /H
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Notification Utility] "C:\Program Files\Notify\notify.exe " /silent

Reboot into regular mode.  Make a new log and post it as a reply.  Has that helped the problem?

Ron

In answer to your questions.  I do have Adaware and Spybot.  I run them religiously every day.  I also have McAfee and I run that once a week.  I try to keep the computer clean.  I've had problems in the past.

The install date of the free trial was 2006-01-31.  It was supposed to be a three day trial.  I did not request the service.  I have the LP address it gives me and the Customer ID # if that helps.

Got ya.  I just have to ask one more question about HiJack this.  I tried moving it to a new location and it tells me that it is running from the temp file.  Should I follow your instructions as per downloading a self -extracting copy and saving to my desktop first?  And should I do anything with the original HiJack this before proceeding?

Ron has taken over your help.... Move HJT into a good location, and then follow his directions.  we believe that will fix your problem.

Followed your instructions and am posting the new log.  One question:  I have now developed strips on the computer monitor.  Any suggestions?
