Hijack this log, problem with Generic!atr and McAfee

Hello, I'm having a possible trojan problem with my lab's XPS 400.  I'm running McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i, and I keep getting an alert window saying "Generic!atr" has been detected (as autorun.inf) and deleted, but it keeps coming up.  I've run various scans in Safe Mode, including a McAfee complete scan, Stinger, and SuperAntiSyware.  Nothing has ever come up, other than some cookies which were disposed of.

Thanks for looking at this!

By the way, the computer's running XP.

Welcome :)

I can see the infection in your log. However before we begin, there are a few preliminaries to take care of.

Please delete HijackThis from the Desktop. It needs to be installed in a permanent folder where it can save backups.

Please download HJT Installer for version 2.02 from Here to your desktop.
If not available use this alternate link: Here
  • Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.
  • It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  • A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.
  • The program will open automatically after installation.
  • You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder. The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.
  • The first time you open HijackThis, check the Main Menu button at the bottom center. When the main menu appears check the box "Show this window when I start HijackThis".
  • Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile." When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here.
  • DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
  • Before closing HJT, please click on the AnalyzeThis button. "Analyze This" DOES NOT mean "Analyze My Log". You will need to post your log on the forum.
  • Close the web page that appears and then close the program

  • Also open HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Select a place to save it. The list should open in notepad.
Copy and paste that list here.

    * Please let me know if you have posted this log on another forum.

    * I will not handle your log if you are using any cracked software, so if you are, please remove it.

    * If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.
Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple, file sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.
Since I find the nature of P2P programs counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state, please remove all P2P file sharing programs prior to my providing you with malware removal assistance.

    * Please let me know if you are an employee and this system is owned by your employer. If so, do you have permission to make changes to it?

    * Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log. Please do not do anything else until you get further instructions.

    * After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures.
In some cases you may be working in Safemode and you will not have the internet available to read information. Please follow all instructions in sequence.

    * If your replies do not fit in one post, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

Thank you for this help.  I really didn't want to have to reformat; we have some expensive software that we would not be able to replace.

*I haven't posted in another forum.
*I don't think this computer has any cracked software or P2P programs installed.
*I have permission to make any changes necessary.
*I haven't fixed any entries with HijackThis yet.
*Also, there is a USB jump drive that may be suspect, as well.  Should I just copy all data from that to the desktop and format the drive to be sure?
*I may have to wait until Monday to do anything after this, as I don't have access to the computer over the weekend.

*Also, there is a USB jump drive that may be suspect, as well. Should I just copy all data from that to the desktop and format the drive to be sure?

You could do that, but please create a folder on the Desktop for all the data that you copy from there.

Please remove Morpheus 5.1 from the system.

Please delete these folders:
C:\Program Files\ Morpheus 5.1
C:\Program Files\ Ares Lite Edition

After that, please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to these:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [areslite] "C:\Program Files\Ares Lite Edition\AresLite.exe" -h
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [avpa] C:\WINDOWS\system32\avpo.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".
Close HijackThis.

Reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Configure to show all files/folders:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders

Please delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ avpo.exe

Reboot normally.

Rehide files by going to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Check: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.

Please perform a BitDefender Online Virus and Malware Scan
(Do not install Bitdefender trial anti-virus software. Simply run the online scan.)
  • Click on I Agree.
  • An ActiveX warning box will appear, click on Install.
  • Under Select What You Want To Check For Viruses.
  • Please Check My Computer and Click Ok
  • Now Click On Click Here To Scan
  • Next, Click on Click here to export the scan report
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • In your next reply, please include the Bitdefender log and a fresh Hijackthis log.

Let me know how things are running at that point.

If you feel that the problem was fixed, that's great!

Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3 allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log for final review and let me know how things are running.

You're welcome. The log looks good except for this:
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe
Did you remove that version of Java before installing the new one?

As soon as everything is running well....
it would be good to flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Consider installing the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: (Not recommended for Vista)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
b. SpywareGuard:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial50.html
Periodically check for updates in both programs.

4. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (by Checkpoint) has a free version http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

6. Do not use file sharing. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known
vulnerabilities.

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the following Rogue/Suspect Spyware Lists.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
http://www.malwarebytes.org/database.php

8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.

9. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 8.1.0 or higher.
It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.
If you need additional assistance, the Adobe forums are here: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html

10. Make sure you are using the most updated version of Java.
The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3

You can go here to download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3 allows end-users to run Java applications".

Click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it. When the download is complete, close the browser.

Remove all prior versions using Add/Remove Programs, and delete the Java folder in Program Files.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.
Reboot.

11. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trendmicro.
TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content.

The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site.

Red for Warning
Yellow for Use Caution
Green for Safe
Grey for Unknown
