HijackThis Log for a Freezing Computer

My in-laws asked me to figure out why their computer freezes. I installed and ran AVG anti-virus, Spybot & Adaware. I found lots of trojans, worms, etc. After quarantining, healing and removing items, their computer runs a lot better.

Would you please analyze this current HijackThis log and let me know if there is anything else.

Thanks,

Ray

ChrisRLG,

Thanks for your help. I found and deleted/fixed most of the items you listed. I found one file that had a similar name, but I did not delete it. I found C:\WINDOWS\System32\gah95on6.ini not C:\WINDOWS\System32\gah95on6.exe .

Let me know if I should delete it.

Here is the current HJT log.

Please advise.

Thanks again,

Ray

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it.  It is very important you do this before anything else!
Use task manager (crtl/alt/del - three keys together) to endtask these running processes.

C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Web Offer\wo.exe
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccess.exe

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.  Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [eZWO] C:\PROGRA~1\Web Offer\wo.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode:

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Web Offer\
C:\Program Files\Media Access\
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ gah95on6.ini

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hello ChrisRLG,

I think we are making progress. I followed most of your instructions. I cannot end the process for the MediaAcck as it keeps reappearing.

Here is the current HJT log.

Let me know what to do next.

Thanks, Ray

Hi

As the folder deletion seems to have worked that file is no longer running.

So try fixing with HJT again

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe

and reboot and do a new HJT log.

Post back with that please.

ChrisRLG,

Your instructions are getting shorter, so we must be making progress. My in-laws computer is running alot better. Thanks.

Here is the latest HJT log. Let me know what I should do next.

One last line (I missed it last time) it is a bad one, but looks like the file itself is missing, so should go with no problems.

O23 - Service: NT login service (ntlogin32) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\libsysmgr.exe (file missing)

Fix that as before, all other windows closed, do look for the file to delete, but it is probably missing.

Unless that line returns on the next HJT log you look clean.

=================================

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
  2. You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  3. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.

    2. Click once on the Security tab

    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.

    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  4. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus

  5. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  6. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

  7. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  8. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

  9. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

  10. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

  11. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
May your God go with you..

ChrisRLG,

I cannot fix the following line as it keeps reappearing. I even tried fixing it in the Safe Mode. Would it help to "Flush" the System Restore points immediately after fixing it?

O23 - Service: NT login service (ntlogin32) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\libsysmgr.exe (file missing)

The latest HJT log is below.

Please advise and thank you for your assistance,

Ray

Try this

Open hijackthis - all other windows closed.

'config' buttom, then misc tools, then 'delete an NT service.

Copy this to the box for the service to delete.

NT login service (ntlogin32)

Then OK.

exit and reboot your system and post back with another HJT log for me.

Chris,

When I try to delete NT login service (ntlogin32)  in HIjackThis, it responds with the following message, "Service 'NT login service (ntlogin32)' was not found in the Registry. Make sure you entered the short name of the service., vbExclamation."

When I just type ntlogin32, I get another message, "The service 'ntlogin32' is enabled and/or running. Disable it first, using HijackThis itself (from the scan results) or the Services.msc Window."

I am not sure what that means.

Please help...

Ray

go to.

start - > run - >

type :-

services.msc /s (enter)

look down in that list till you find that service, then use 'stop' and change the startup status to disabled.

Then reboot your computer.

You should then be able to use HJT to delete that service. (But if not it will be inactive).

You should also be able to delete the file then.

It looks like it morphed in your last LOG. (and I missed it)

O23 - Service: Windows Taskbar Manager (wtaskbarmngr) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\taskbarmngr.exe (file missing)

That too is bad.

Info on that program
http://it.trendmicro-europe.com/enterprise/security_info/ve_detail.php?Vname=WORM_SPYBOT.YY
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/taskbarmngr.exe-8032.html

Use that services program to stop that process and then find and delete the file. Just the same as you did the previous one.

Post back with another log when done - when you look at that new log, unless you add any new programs you should not see any new O23 lines added and that one disapear.

ChrisRLG,

I was able to follow your instructions and get rid of the 023 - Service: Windows Taskbar Manager. The current log is below. There is another 023 service that does not look familiar. It is the Netropa NHK Server.

Let me know if I should stop it.

Also, we are wondering if the Dellnet by MSN is scanning incoming and outgoing emails, including attachments. Do you know if AVG anti-virus does it?

Thanks again for your help.

Ray

That one is legit :)

========================
